Aoun Holds onto President's Election by the People, Calls for Demo Next Friday

Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun reiterated on Friday his call for the election of a president from the people as he announced his backing for protests, but said he only partly agreed with anti-government demonstrators who accuse the entire political class of corruption.

During a press conference he held at his residence in Rabieh, Aoun also invited the supporters of his Free Patriotic Movement to carry out a protest next Friday “to ask for reform and for participation in decision-making, and to call for fighting corruption.”

The demonstration is scheduled to be held at 5:30 pm in downtown Beirut's Martyrs Square.

“Legitimacy is given to the authorities by the people,” he said, adding “no ruler can be legitimate if the people don't recognize his legitimacy.”

Aoun reiterated his demand for the election of a president by the people and called for the approval of an electoral law based on proportional representation.

He also urged the formation of a government that introduces reforms.

“This is the only reformist plan,” said the lawmaker, who is also a presidential candidate.

He told reporters that Lebanon's rulers have lost the people’s backing because of rampant corruption, which is “blocking the state's arteries.”

Aoun also urged friendly countries not to interfere in Lebanon's internal affairs to back the rulers whom he says have lost legitimacy.

“We are glad that the people woke up and began demanding their rights,” he said, as he announced his backing for the latest street protests.

But he stressed that he only partly agreed with the demonstrators because unlike what they claim there are reformist politicians in Lebanon.

Street protests against the government have turned violent after several movements turned a trash crisis, which erupted last month, into a popular uprising against the political class that has dominated Lebanon since its civil war ended in 1990.

The “You Stink” movement is organizing another protest in downtown Beirut on Saturday, but Aoun said his supporters would not take part in the demonstration.

Aoun was asked about the boycott of FPM, Hizbullah, Tashnag Party and Marada Movement ministers of Thursday’s cabinet session and whether they would hold onto their stance not to attend sessions.

“There are discussions to resolve the cabinet crisis,” he said, adding that he didn't address the issue during the press conference to avoid stirring tension.

President Aoun is right the Muslim majority should elect the president, legitimacy is given to the authorities by the majority of the people!

Eagle, I very much believe that Mowaten is not alone in the trolling, I believe that Mystic and Southern, to mention but a few are doing some serious if not massive trolling. But personally I find that childish and stupid of them, even a mature 6 year old won't bother doing this, but this is what I always said, people suffering from tunnel-vision can see far.

I now can see the desperation in the acts of the M8 followers of this forum, I mean look at how they are thumbing themselves up and how they are thumbing us down. I mean look at our rising star Southern with almost 40 ups, and everyone who opposed him with as many downs. You people are sick, childish and definitely screwed up there, but you see, you idiots are doing us a big favor, since this is the measure of your intelligence, then glad am I that you do not rule this country, not now, not ever. All your arguments about defending minorities here and there are sheer propaganda consumed only by fools. But sadly, the bigger fools are the people doing the mod of this forum, whose auto system is being abused once more, and this despite our repeated warnings. A dormant team, that reflects a dormant parliament as usual.

(1). Mr. Aoun, or better known as the Claoun, this is my response to you: That you are a selfish SOB who is ready to cheat no matter what. People know that by wanting to do the vote from the street, that you are aiming for the Shiite votes, whom you still count on numbers. You are also hoping to get your soup mixed up with Syrian votes and any donkey you can get along the bandwagon. I am one willing to take your challenge, and you know why ya 7arameh? Because on two occasions, the street has defeated you and your allies, thereafter you people cheated again to rob your opponents of their victories. But you see ya Claoun, you are a very annoying person: You know that Lebanon is under a terrible situation, the street, of yeah, the street wants rotten bast*rds like you out. You know that it is people like you that have caused all our problems, yet you have the cockiness, the arrogance and the indecency to call for street votes?

Thumb -phoenix1 28 August 2015, 15:47

(2). Aoun. Wlak leysh, did you manage to get anything more than 1200 last time? This time you want to bring your Shiite friends to get you president even if you people had to burn Lebanon again? Wlak ya Claoun, you are behaving as if everything was perfectly normal, but I am one who very much believes that you have lost it ya khityar il mrit, enta we7ed mtakhtakh wou m3affan. You do not have one bit of decency to allay our multiple problems, you ya traitor, you the man who collapsed the only resistance to Syria and them got to embrace all those you one upon a time insulted daily, you have done worse, you are licking their arses daily, is the presidency so valuable to you or do you really want to be emperor on a burning nation?

Thumb -phoenix1 28 August 2015, 15:47

(3). Aoun. Mr. Claoun, I can assure, you, we are trying to build a state of laws in the fullest respect of the constitution, Hezbollah has emboldened you to break the law and made your sickness even more acute, this time you will break no law, no constitution and you will never see the seat. Your Sayed hero friend hiding under ground will remain there for possibly all his life and you will die witnessing a new Lebanon created. Il 3ama bi albak shou bala mokh.

Thumb -phoenix1 28 August 2015, 16:25

Thanks Justin, this Claoun is beyond description, I have never in my life seen anything like him. He bewilders even the hardiest of us. You come to the point where you feel that yeah, we've seen it all coming from him, only to see him push the sh*t button even further. I am desirous of keeping the decorum, but really, this man is one who is more evil than Satan himself, he won't stop at anything, I am sure that even when on his deathbed, he will still ask his advisers if they can exhaust his last wish, that they take him to Baabda and take a picture of him on the seat. Of all Clowns in the world Aoun is the last person who should ever dare talk of Baabda, let him at least consider how he left it last time it was entrusted to him. Heyda we7ed bala damir.

Thumb lebnanfirst 28 August 2015, 15:48

Aoun's assertions notwithstanding, it *is* ALL the political class that needs trashing and him at the head of it. It is shameful for Aoun, who has made a 180 degree turn from his original positions via HA, to try now and claim the higher ground. He does not have it.
He is still clinging to the ever remote chance of ascending to the Presidency, he will not get there no matter what he tries.
Just consider his preaching about democracy and that he will show us all how it's done by enforcing elections for FPM presidency - then - he pushes Basil down his party's throat!!
Democracy and reform are a far cry from Aoun's practices as events have amply proved.

Thumb lebnanfirst 28 August 2015, 15:53

I hope that the You Stink and Accountability movements do not fall for Aoun and HA's trap and attempts to hijack our anger at ALL the political class by maintaining their secular demonstrations and keep their lazer focus on the demands of most of us Lebanese which are aimed at ousting the de facto political class and replacing them with those that work for the people - really work for the people.

None of our existing political trash will ever be willing to give up their piece of the pie and the status quo, we Lebanese must struggle to gain back our nation and true sovereignty.

I now have come to believe that Aoun is brain-dead and that he is being controlled remotely 100%. All his masters need is his ugly face, that cacophonous voice of his, and yes, why not, occasionally that blood-stained dirty hand of his to gesticulate a little, if datedly to help convince that he is still alive. What a pile of rubbish, honest.

Thumb -phoenix1 28 August 2015, 17:21

@phoenix1. Your express the thoughts of more than 98% of christians, all Sunni and?% of Shia. Thank you
AOUN does not mind to be the last Christian president as far as he can succeed to put his dirty bum on the seat even if it is only for hours. However I am sure he is a loser even with a direct fair election from people (which I am against not because of fear but because it is not in the constitution).
I hope the "youStink" group are honest enough by not promising AOUN to contribute in his demo next Friday (to show larger crowd) in exchange for his hidden contribution with the demo of this weekend.
Hopefully I am wrong but it is known that FPM are famous in any dirty agreement to falsely swell their presence.

Peace (guest) thank you for very good posts, rest assured, they are being read. On the FPM, it's a party used to cheat, reflecting the nature of its inceptor Aoun. Now he wants to send people to the streets just hoping to show that he has support, in truth he is trying to piggy-back, but he has been nibbed before he even sneezed. Aoun the Claoun is now a well-known quantity, I cannot use the word quality because there's none to attach to him, nor to his party of lies and fabrications.

Missing helicopter 29 August 2015, 04:01

Aoun, we have something called a Constitution and an elected body to make changes to the constitution. Put your efforts in electing a new parliament and if you are the most popular guy then your parliamentary majority will lead the way in changing the constitution. Aoun thinks a Republic is a sand box for him to create whatever his fancy dreams of. We already saw how democratic Basil's election was as the new FPM potato head.
