Students supporting al-Mustaqbal movement and others backing the March 8 forces clashed on Tuesday during a ceremony on the birthday of slain ex-Premier Rafik Hariri at Lebanese American University in Beirut.

A student told Naharnet by telephone that supporters of Speaker Nabih Berri’s Amal movement provoked the pro-Hariri students.

The verbal abuse then escalated into tossing stones and trash cans at each other.

The student, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the army intervened to prevent a further deterioration in the situation.

All classes and exams were suspended and they will be resumed on Wednesday.

The head of LAU’s security was injured in the clash, the student added.

Four students were injured during the clashes and were admitted to al-Zahraa hospital, the National News Agency reported.

Al-Mustaqbal movement issued a statement later on condemning the behavior of “the March 8 forces during every event they hold at the LAU campus.”

However, the NNA that the clashes erupted between Hariri supporters and members of Michel Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement.

The FPM students at the university also issued a statement condemning the incident and the “continuous attacks by al-Mustaqbal militia” on them.

was there when it happened, the m8 supporters provoked the mustaqbal students verbally, but it was actually mustaqbal supporters from outside the uni that sarted throwing rocks (eyewitnesses saw the rocks being brought from the Quoriitem palace!). personally, i couldn't care less, both parties as well as all others should be blown to hell! Is this the future of Lebanon? Are these barbarians (both sides) seriously the hope of tomorrow? shame on our leaders for allowing such nonsense, and shame on the students for following the leaders like sheep!

"Allouchi", you're the one who needs to be taught a lesson and move on in life instead of fighting with people on them being Sunni or Shiite, or whether they side with Hariri or Amal. Grow up, and stop causing fights in university.

What's this crap university politicized to the bone? This should be illegal! Political activists within the college should be banned.

A university campus, any campus, should be free of political activities and this kind of crap should be banned, PERIOD! This is a place for learning and regardless of political views a bunch of students may hold, they should take it off campus and on the streets... This is ridiculous!!!!

You have to love the irony!
Students fighting over two men partly responsible for the fact there are no (well paid) jobs for them once they graduate university?!?!?

When will Lebanon's youth wake up and realize the likes of Berri, Hariri and all the others, despite all their money and "support", have done nothing to help ensure there are jobs avilable for students when they leave university.

Good on the Berri supporters, why would the Hariri guys envoke this in the first place by holding a political event that is not that significant (a birthday) in a UNIVERSITY ! its a place of education, some politics, but not political birthday partys... thats just asking for it...

Missing peace 02 November 2011, 12:48

no need to go to university and waste their time if it is to stay as stupid as their leaders...
it seems that learning doesn t bring them an ounce of intelligence....

Guys and gals,
Wake up to the reality
All our politicians are losers
Stop giving all these ediots who are trying very hard to run our country more power to ruin our country
They all need to be kicked out of their positions and get new blood into politics.
Politics is for all Lebanese and should not be handed down to family members. No body owns these seats!!!
We should all protest to change the constitution where you can not hand your golden seats to your golden children.
A politician has a job to do. If he fails, he is sent home regardless who he is. If you work for a company and fail to do your job, guess what? You're Fired!! That's how it should be!
