Salam: Stability and Security a Red Line

W460

Prime Minister Tammam Salam said on Friday that there are some parties trying to exploit the civil society protests for interests that do not serve the Lebanese, stressing that the stability and security of the country are a "red line."

“It is clear that there are some parties trying to deviate the civil society from their goals, and are trying to take advantage of their moves for interests that do not serve the Lebanese nor the goals that triggered the civil mobilizations,” media reports quoted Salam.

He was referring to Thursday's demonstrations in downtown Beirut where clashes turned into a chaotic scene during confrontations between the civil society activists and the security forces causing heavy damages to private and public properties.

Salam's comments came after a meeting he held with Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq and judge Samir Hammmoud on Friday.

Nevertheless, Salam gave instructions to the security forces to "commit to wisdom when dealing with the demonstrators and to preserve their right to express their points of views peacefully."

However he added that respecting the law is a must and that anyone found to be involved in assaulting the security forces or acts of sabotage will be punished.

The Premier however denounced the state of chaos that spiraled during Thursday's protest, he said: "from the beginning we said that these demonstrations are righteous and reflect the pain of the Lebanese. But what we have seen of the insane acts of sabotage in the last demonstration, went out of the framework of peaceful expression and turned to riots which raises many questions about their purpose."

He concluded: "Security and stability in the country are a red line, violating the law, assaulting the security forces and public and private properties will be punished based on what the law stipulates."

"from the beginning we said that these demonstrations are righteous and reflect the pain of the Lebanese"

so you see lebanese in pain but what do you do about it? NOTHING so no wonder people are getting more and more violent...

"turned to riots which raises many questions about their purpose." sure, when you let the situation rot and do not listen to people what do you expect?

the thing is the politicians are scared about these protests as they come from citizens with no link to any parties so they cannot manipulate them...

so = accuse them of being part of a "conspiracy" to get rid of them and use force... nothing new here...

The Civil Society is 100% righteous when defending common needs for a decent life.
But they go wrong when it becomes politics and violent.
They would have gained all the way had they avoided violence.

The vast majority of the citizens never wanted any violence.

Who wanted them to fail? Who introduced violence?

U weren't there. The darak just started spraying ppl with water cannons. This wasn't the first demonstration, y was it the worst? The police were too heavy handed. And trust me the ppl weren't trying to destroy property, the bulk of the ppl were in front of virgin megastore, it wasn't even damaged. Any damaged was a result of the clash between the ppl n the police.

Since these politicians/war lords know for a fact that "some groups" are controlling these demonstrations, why not simply tell us who these "some groups" are?? Wouldn't it be a lot easier, if they actually knew anything? These are the same tired tricks all gov use to discredit their opponents.

Would there have been a WWII if Hitler did not exist???

Missing beirutbastard00 10 October 2015, 18:08

Most likely yes. It was the conditions of that time that created a hitler. WW1 left a lot unsettled.

Does no one else see that every side is against the demonstrations? Berri, jumblat, aoun, harriri... Either the protestors work for all sides, or for none. It's a joke that Lebanese ppl can actually believe what the gov says anymore. These warlord and thieves have stuffed their bellies while the country rotted from the core. The protests are pure and righteous. The aggressors are the ones ordering police to attack its citizens. If you were down there you would understand. It was full of families, kids, women, elderly... And the police attacked with force. Plz don't buy into the gov propaganda.

Missing peace 10 October 2015, 18:24

you are totally right... every party is scared of these protests as it comes from ordinary people not affiliated to anyone thus hard to manipulate.... some populists say they side with them (as if we are to believe them) just to appear nice and understanding while they are just afraid!

their only weapon is to discredit them
