Ailing Kerr Won't Coach Warriors in Opener

Steve Kerr, who coached the Golden State Warriors to the NBA title last season, won't be on the team's bench to start the season, the Warriors said Saturday.

Kerr is battling continued symptoms, including severe headaches, caused by a spinal fluid leak stemming from back surgery in July.

Interim coach Luke Walton will be at the helm when the Warriors open the season Tuesday at home against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Walton has been coaching in place of Kerr throughout the pre-season and general manager Bob Myers said there is still no timetable for Kerr's return.

"Even if you ask Steve, he doesn't know," Myers said.

Kerr had surgery on July 28, and had another procedure on September 4 after it was discovered the dura around his spine had been nicked and spinal fluid leaked during his first surgery.

Kerr was at the team's practice Saturday and will make occasional visits until he is ready for a full return.

He will be at Tuesday's game for the ceremony awarding the Warriors their championship rings.
