Rescued Chilean miner Edison Pena is returning to run New York City Marathon.

Pena completed the marathon last year, less than a month after he and 32 other miners were rescued after being trapped underground for 69 days.

New York Road Runners announced his return to the race Thursday.

The 35-year-old Pena earned the nickname "The Runner" after logging up to six miles each day through the mine tunnels to keep his mind and body sharp.

In New York, he ran, walked and hobbled on a bad knee to the finish line last year. Pena said he would return to the event with proper training.

More than 45,000 runners will compete in the NYC Marathon on Sunday.
