Putin Slams 'Stab in Back' after Warplane Downing as Turkey Says Had 'Duty' to Act

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Ankara on Tuesday that Turkey's downing of a Russian warplane on the Syrian border would have "serious consequences" for bilateral ties, as Turkey's premier described the act as a national "duty."

Speaking at a meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Sochi, a tense-looking Putin branded the shooting down of the aircraft a "stab in the back" by "accomplices of terrorists.

"I cannot call what happened today anything else."

"Today's tragic event will have serious consequences for Russian-Turkish relations," Putin said.

"We will of course carefully analyze everything that happened," he added.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu meanwhile said that Turkey had a duty to act against anyone violating its borders.

"Everyone must know that it is our international right and national duty to take any measure against whoever violates our air or land borders," Davutoglu said in Ankara.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan meanwhile said that "everyone must respect the right of Turkey to protect its borders," in his first official reaction to the incident.

The fighter jet was shot down Tuesday on the Syrian border by two Turkish F-16s warplanes.

Ankara claimed it had violated Turkish airspace 10 times within a five-minute period.

Moscow said the fate of the aircraft's two pilots was still unclear, while Syrian opposition sources said one pilot was dead and another missing.

Putin rejected the accusations that the Russian plane running sorties in Syria had violated Turkish airspace, saying it did not pose any threat to Turkey.

"Our plane was shot down over the territory of Syria by an air-to-air missile from a Turkish F-16 jet. It fell in Syrian territory four kilometers from the border with Turkey," Putin said.

"Our pilots and our plane did not in any way threaten Turkey."

Putin stressed that NATO-member Turkey, which is a member of a U.S.-lead coalition bombing the Islamic State group, shot down the plane despite Moscow's existing agreement with the United States to avoid such incidents.

"We will never tolerate such crimes," Putin said.

"Of course we expect the global community to find the strength to unite against common evil."

The ministry in Moscow summoned the Turkish military attache over the incident, the Turkish embassy in the Russian capital told AFP.

Just to clarify, the Su-24 is a strategic bomber and does not carry any air-to-air weapons. They usually fly their missions with fighter escorts for protection. In this case, since ISIS doesn't have an air force, they probably were conducting raids without fighter escorts so it became an easy target for the Turkish F-16. So I can understand why Putin calls it backstabbing.

Thumb marcus 24 November 2015, 16:40

you people are a bunch of trolls. " the Su-24 is a strategic bomber and does not carry any air-to-air weapons."

Now every troll becomes a military expert. A simple wikipedia search will tell you the SU 24 is "all-weather attack aircraft/interdictor " and "and provision for the latest guided weapons, including R-73 (AA-11 'Archer') air-to-air missiles."

"Also, the Russian plane was not on a mission to down Turkish planes."

When Israeli planes fly over Lebanon are they on a mission to down Lebanese planes? Sovereignty is relative when the iranian axis mouthpieces try to justify the unjustifiable.

Thumb ashtah 24 November 2015, 18:01

Putin got his ego bruised today. He will have to think twice before he makes his next move. He could find his air force blown out of the skies if he continues with his arrogance. He can tell Lebanon to close its airspace but surely he cannot tell Turkey what to do. The events today proved that.

Thumb lubnani.masi7i 24 November 2015, 20:21

tric 'turks .... promoted the European Islamization' The overwhelming majority of Europeans under Ottoman rule were never forced to convert. Contrast that to Muslims under Christian rule who were given choice between genocide (sometime they had not choice as genocide was the only option), conversion to Christianity or exile. Now with regard to the slaughter of Armenians in Turkey, that is the fault of the fascist militarists in the 'new Turk' movement (you know the ones that currently support Assad in Turkey) and not the Ottomans (which many accuse Erdodan of belonging to) who had very little influence at the time.
