The English Football Association has charged Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas with improper conduct over his criticism of a referee.

Villas-Boas said Chris Foy's performance in Chelsea's 1-0 loss at Queens Park Rangers last month was "very, very poor" and accused the referee and his officials of being swayed by the crowd at Loftus Road.

Chelsea's Jose Bosingwa and Didier Drogba were sent off in the fiery west London derby.

After previously asking Villas-Boas to explain his statements, English football's governing body announced on Friday he "has been charged with improper conduct following media comments he made about the match official."

The Portuguese manager has until Tuesday to respond to the charge.
