Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Daryan slammed on Wednesday officials' ongoing failure to elect a new head of state, while emphasizing the importance of the municipal polls.

He said during a message on the occasion of Isra and Miraj: “Failure to elect a president is dangerous and taking part in the municipal elections is a national duty.”

Tackling the presidential impasse requires political will and national unity, he continued.

“There is nothing wrong with political disputes, but they should not be an excuse to cripple work at state institutions,” Daryan said.

Lebanon is passing through a critical phase and “we can only exit it through unity, dialogue, and understanding,” he stressed.

On the Beirut municipal elections, he underlined the importance of “fair representation,” echoing the remarks made by Mustaqbal Movement leader MP Saad Hariri on Monday.

The elections are scheduled for Sunday.
