Major Plane Crashes over the Past Decade

Searches were under way in the eastern Mediterranean on Thursday after an EgyptAir flight vanished from radar screens, with a Greek aviation source saying it had crashed south of Karpathos island.

The flight, which had 66 people on board, was headed to Cairo after taking off from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

Here is a recap of civilian plane disasters that have killed 200 people or more in the past 10 years.

- 2015 -October 31, EGYPT: An Airbus A-321 operated by the Russian airline Metrojet breaks up over the Sinai desert after taking off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, heading for Saint Petersburg. All 224 people on board were killed in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

- 2014 -March 8, THE INDIAN OCEAN: Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, a Boeing 777-200, mysteriously disappears on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people aboard. Some debris has been recovered, and an international search for the plane itself continues in the southern Indian Ocean.

July 17, UKRAINE: Less than four months later, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, also a Boeing 777, is shot down while flying over rebel-held east Ukraine en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam, killing all 298 people aboard.

- 2009 -June 1, ATLANTIC OCEAN: An Air France Airbus A-330 crashes after taking off from Rio de Janeiro on a flight to Paris, killing all 228 on board.

- 2007 -July 17, BRAZIL: An Airbus A-320 belonging to Brazil's Tam Airlines careers off the runway upon landing at the Sao Paulo airport in heavy rain, shoots across a crowded avenue then slams into a warehouse before bursting into flames. A total of 199 people are killed.
