Berri Slams Accusing Aoun and Hariri of Seeking to 'Topple Shiism'

Berri denied reports that quoted him as accusing the al-Mustaqbal Movement leader ex-PM Saad Hariri and MP Michel Aoun of seeking to “topple Shiism,” and described the reports as “inciting,” An Nahar Daily reported on Wednesday.

“All the news and talks that AMAL and the Liberation and Development bloc mentioned something about a Maronite-Sunni bilateral power-sharing of the 1943 are unfounded. This rhetoric is inciting and I categorically deny it,” Berri told the daily.

“We will not boycott the election sessions in spite of our objection to vote for Aoun. I will congratulate anyone who succeeds,” he added.

Media reports alleged Tuesday that Berri had accused Aoun and Hariri of seeking to “topple political Shiism” in Lebanon, warning that such an attempt might lead to a “civil war” in the country.

MP Alain Aoun of the FPM announced Monday that Hariri will announce his endorsement of Aoun “this week.”

The ex-PM has been exploring the possibility of endorsing Aoun for several weeks now and on Sunday Education Minister Elias Bou Saab of the FPM announced that Hariri has officially decided to endorse Aoun's presidential bid.

Lebanon has been without a president since the term of Michel Suleiman ended in May 2014 and Hizbullah, Aoun's Change and Reform bloc and some of their allies have been boycotting the parliament's electoral sessions, stripping them of the needed quorum.

Hariri launched an initiative in late 2015 to nominate Franjieh for the presidency but his proposal was met with reservations from the country's main Christian parties as well as Hizbullah.

The supporters of Aoun's presidential bid argue that he is more eligible than Franjieh to become president due to the size of his parliamentary bloc and his bigger influence in the Christian community.

Berri Slams Accusing Aoun and Hariri of Seeking to 'Topple Shiism'

Hariri risked his political career when he nominated franjieh and now he put an end to it by nominating aoun. The FPM accused him of being the father of corruption, an ISIS supporter, his party an Emira of ISIS in Lebanon, his party's flag was stepped on by the FPM supporters and filmed, Aoun wrote him one way ticket and assured us Hariri will never be coming back; he was accused of obstructing the election of the unanimous Christian leader. Yet, he is now voting for Aoun.

Miqati was made prime minister by Aoun, took advantage of Aoun's hatred for Hariri, ran a government without opposition for more than 2 years and now describes electing Aoun for president as SUICIDAL.

Followers of Caporal hate Hariri and will continue even if Hariri endorses Caporal.

What is equally disgusting is when Ibrahim Kanaan on TV last night saying it is Berri's right not to vote for Aoun and they have no problem with that. However, if Hariri does not want to vote for Aoun then it is all about the National Pact, coexistence, the future of Christians, etc etc.

Kanaän is afraid because Berri has a militia so he knows his limits.

Equal rights is a precondition for sustainable justice and peace; without equal rights a population is doomed to be divided and will not be united as one nation under one flag.In Lebanon religion in politics is directly blocking equal rights , all previous and current attempts to unite the population are window dressing! Solution? yes, the population, and not politicians or religious leaders, has to demand disconnecting religion from politics. Arguments such as " this will lead to marginalisation of religious minority", is a not true , it is a manipulation invented by opportunists.

Lebanese leadership is such a joke. They have no clue how to compromise and govern. So Mr. Berri, if you are not a supporter of Aoun why not work with Harriri, Geagae and Jumblat and pick a nominee? Instead you are sitting in the background hiding behind Nasrallah and waiting for Harriri to make a move so you to throw darts at it.If that is not enough, you start to talk tough about a civil war! What a moron, go take a trip to Allepo and see what the new civil wars look like, do you want your country to look like that? These idiots need to learn how to govern by compromise and transparency and stop being nothing more than minimalist obstructionists.
