Top EU Officials to Attend Counter-Terrorism Dialogue in Beirut

EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove will visit Lebanon on March 1 and 2 to attend a high level meeting on the National Counter Terrorism Strategy, which is jointly organized by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Union.

De Kerchove will be accompanied by experts in counter-terrorism from the EU, EU Member States, and CEPOL (European agency for law enforcement training), said a statement issued by the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon.

The high level meeting on the National Counter-Terrorism Strategy will be co-chaired by De Kerchove and Director of Political and Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Charbel Wehbi. The EU experts and representatives of the relevant Lebanese ministries and security agencies will attend the meeting.

The EU officials' discussions with the Lebanese authorities and security agencies will focus on “developing a national strategy on counter-terrorism,” the statement said.

They will also address better ways to strengthen coordination between concerned stakeholders to tackle this challenge affecting peace and stability in Lebanon, the Middle East region and Europe.

De Kerchove will also hold meetings with the Minister of Defense Yaaqoub Sarraf, the Director General of the Internal Security Forces Major General Ibrahim Basbous, and the Director General of General Security Major General Abbas Ibrahim.
