The Cabinet on Monday finalized significant parts of the draft state budget the first article was approved entirely, Culture Minister and acting information minister Ghattas Khoury said.

“The discussion then focused on articles related to the budgets of the ministries and we approved some of them,” he added.

“We accomplished a significant part of the draft and the budget would be ready soon,” Khoury said.

Answering reporters’ questions, Khoury said: “The budget is being discussed item by item, and this needs some time because some ministers want to increase the budgets of their ministries. The atmosphere is very positive and I see no obstacles to ending this discussion as quickly as required.”

He added: “Today we completed budgets for key ministries, including the presidency of the republic, the Premiership, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Interior Ministry, which are key Ministries. We can achieve the budget, but I cannot specify the number of sessions we need.”

Asked if a political decision to approve the budget has been taken, he said: “The decision is to approve budget, which is not linked to anything else.”

He added that “the budget is not related to the electoral law, because the electoral law is another debate. When we agree on an electoral law we will approve it.”

Khoury also confirmed that the Cabinet would meet in Baabda on Wednesday to discuss its agenda that includes security appointments.
