U.S. Threatens Unilateral Action if U.N. Fails to Act on Syria
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe United States warned Wednesday that it could take unilateral action if the United Nations fails to respond to a suspected chemical attack in Syria that has left scores dead, including children.
"When the United Nations consistently fails in its duty to act collectively, there are times in the life of states that we are compelled to take our own action," U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said.
The warning came during an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council called by France and Britain after the attack in the early hours on Tuesday on a rebel-held town in Idlib province.
Haley lashed out at Russia for failing to rein in its ally Syria, standing in the council chamber to hold up photographs of victims -- one showing a young child lying lifeless, a mask covering his face.
"How many more children have to die before Russia cares?" she asked.
"If Russia has the influence in Syria that it claims to have, we need to see them use it," she said. "We need to see them put an end to these horrific acts."
At least 72 people, among them 20 children, were killed in the strike on Khan Sheikhun, and dozens more were left gasping for air, convulsing, and foaming at the mouth, doctors said.
It is thought to be the worst chemical weapons attack in Syria since 2013, when sarin gas was used.
"If we are not prepared to act, then this council will keep meeting, month after month to express outrage at the continuing use of chemical weapons and it will not end," Haley said.
"We will see more conflict in Syria. We will see more pictures that we can never unsee."
Britain, France and the United States have presented a draft resolution demanding a full investigation of the attack, but Russia said the text was "categorically unacceptable."
The draft resolution backs a probe by the Organization of the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and demands that Syria cooperate to provide information on its military operations on the day of the assault.
Russia's Deputy Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov told the council that the proposed resolution was hastily prepared and unnecessary, but voiced support for an inquiry.
"The main task now is to have an objective inquiry into what happened," he said.
Negotiations were continuing on the draft text after Russia's foreign ministry said in Moscow that "the text as presented is categorically unacceptable."
but an investigation has to be carried out to determine who was behind, since all evidences about that tragidy point at the so-called rebels, the terror groups.
still you like machine guns!?, btw.

investigation, what for? you already know the answer... the rebels took their own plane and bombed the city to kill their own people... LOL
when in fact "we all know" that the regime was bored of winning on every front and decided to give the terrorists and their imperialistic handlers an excuse to intervene.
so, the warmonger is worry about children death... but what about all the children dead due to your indiscriminate attack on Yemen along with the wahhabi state!?
double standard.
of course, i care, but you have to ask why the "regime" has to do that since he is on the right track and in the right train.. lastly all intl community, changed its satnce in his favour.. the so-called oppositions are left out, they want to blame him for something he would never do because it would harm the that harmony.
now @gigaheretic will come and say "who benefits" and " why would assad use chemical weapons"
mowaten of wilayat al faqih: don't you ever get tired of trolling and making fake accounts?
Hell not even the Iranian foreign ministry is buying the Syrian Russian bull.
“We strongly condemn any use of chemical weapons, irrespective of who used them"
and who can blame them. The spin on this from the regime medias will make a whirling dervishe dizzy:
- First it was a made up story the Syrian air force did not bomb any targets in idlib
- Then it was an explosion inside a munition warehouse containing chemical rockets
- Then it was the Turkish or Israeli air forces that hit a building storing chemical weapons , so the opposition could blame it on the regime
- Now we have the Russians contradicting the Syrians by stating that their air recon found that it was the Syrian air force that targeted a warehouse near a workshop making mines infused with poisonous material.. they'll probably come up with something fresh tomorrow, stay tuned.
that's correct mowaten, "nice cartload of BS" is exactly what everyone kept saying with every ridiculous new spin ne7war al mokawama wal moumana3a came up with.. and also as it happens every time there is one of your family gathering.
The Islamists likely did this. Why would Assad do it when he has won the war with the help of Russia and in Trump's favor? Makes no sense. I blame the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, Turkey & Saudi Arabia.
Whether you think Assad did it or not doesn't change the fact that he's a criminal. All parties involved are dirty.
