President Michel Aoun emphasized on Monday that consultations to reach a new electoral law for the country's parliamentary elections before June 20 have made progress.

“Contacts have made progress as for agreeing on a new vote law before June 20,” Aoun told his visitors.

The President stressed on “the importance of the people's choices, because the governor does not want applause from the people but wants work and solidarity to change the situation and introduce reforms."

The parliament's term ends on June 20.

The president has the authority to open an extraordinary session giving political parties extra time to agree on a new law.

But if he decides to dissolve the parliament, then the elections would be staged based on the law in force, in this case the 1960 majoritarian vote system.
