Bassil to Skip Arab League Meeting on Iran

W460

Foreign Minister Jebran Bassil will not attend an extraordinary Arab League meeting on Sunday called by Saudi Arabia to discuss "violations" committed by Iran, a ministry source told the AFP news agency.

Arab foreign ministers will gather in Cairo on Sunday at the request of Riyadh, whose simmering regional rivalry with Tehran has escalated in recent weeks.

But Lebanon's top diplomat Bassil will not be among them, a foreign ministry source said.

"This morning, a decision was taken that Lebanon would be presented by Antoine Azzam, the permanent representative to the Arab League," the source said.

"Foreign Minister Jebran Bassil will not be present."

For more than a decade, Lebanon's political class has been largely split between Iran-backed Hizbullah and its allies, and a Saudi-supported coalition led by Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

Hariri stepped down from his post on November 4 in a televised address from Riyadh, sparking fears Lebanon would be caught up in the spiralling tensions between Riyadh and Tehran.

Sunni Muslim powerhouse Saudi Arabia and Iran, the predominant Shiite power, are long-standing rivals based as much in geostrategic interests as religious differences.

According to a memo seen last week by AFP, the Saudi request for an Arab League meeting was based on a missile it says its air defenses intercepted near Riyadh after being fired from Yemen on November 4.

A Saudi-led coalition has been battling Shiite Huthi rebels in Yemen, and it has accused the Iran-backed rebels of firing the missile.

Saudi Arabia's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman later accused Iran of "direct military aggression" against the kingdom by supplying the rebels with ballistic missiles.

He's the enemy of the state. It's about time lebanon gets pressured into kicking this Iranian puppet out of the government. The situation is unbearable!

Thumb lubnani.masi7i 19 November 2017, 14:52

best friend now with your Hariri who supposedly resigned in 'protest' over Iran's control of Lebanon through Hezbollah.

Thumb Mystic 19 November 2017, 16:09

"Tillerson’s backing of Hariri and the Lebanese government contrasted sharply with the approach taken by U.S. ally Saudi Arabia which has lumped Lebanon with Hezbollah as parties hostile to it."

That is your Ally and American heroes that backs the Hariri Government, they did not want him to resign.

Thumb Mystic 19 November 2017, 16:48

Where is your evidence that Assad or Hezbollah killed Hariri?
You have allegations never facts yourselves.

Thumb ashtah 19 November 2017, 16:59

mystic; since as you say KSA kidnapped Hariri and put him under house arrest and had to release him under pressure, is it safe to expect the threatened Hariri will never visit KSA after this occurrence?

Thumb ashtah 19 November 2017, 17:04

Hariri said in his interview he would return to Lebanon after he overhauls his personal security and cover.

When he's confronted with the truth, Prince anchor baby bin kharoof al takia, will always attempt to deflect and redirect. As well, play the victim as taught in his native Iran.

Thumb Mystic 19 November 2017, 17:49

Well I can tell you a fact here and now.

You are the weaklings here, whilst the Resistance act you people talk.
Your kingdom failed to get what they wanted from Hariri.

Assad is still alive and Syria has never been better. Which means many new fronts against your country Israel have been placed.

In Iraq the Kurds and ISIS have been pushed back, and in Yemen the Ansarullah kills Saudi troops everyday.

Live is good when it is of action and not small talk.

Thumb Elemental 19 November 2017, 18:07

Coming from the king of small talk lol. Listen Prince, no Lebanese would praise foreign powers. Do me a favor and quit playing the victim?

Lebanon is a member of the Iranian Islamic League and as such will not attend the meeting of the Arab League in Cairo.

Thumb marcus 19 November 2017, 16:24

Iran is holding our Foreign Minister hostage and putting him under House Arrest. Iran is preventing him from leaving for Cairo to attend the Arab League emergency meeting.
