German Foreign Ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke said the task given to Najib Miqati to form a new government is “not easy.”

He said his government is “carefully monitoring the developments in Lebanon since they have an impact on the region.”

“Berlin is waiting for PM-designate Najib Miqati, and regardless of the new parliamentary majority, to make contacts with the various forces in the country and form a government that works to preserve stability,” Peschke said in an interview published Thursday by pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat.

He urged all Lebanese political parties to “act responsibly as regards to the relationship with the Special Tribunal for Lebanon probing the 2005 assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri.

Peschke said Germany believed that the new Lebanon government will be “conscious of its responsibility towards the international tribunal."

In response to a question, he said Berlin expects Syria to play a role that would help preserve Lebanon’s stability.
