President Michel Aoun on Monday said that transforming the government institutions into a robust e-government program “prevents corruption and fraud.”

“Digital government transformation secures transparency of the administration and prevents all kinds of bribery and obstruction and prevents forgery,” said Aoun at the opening of the Digital Government Conference 2018 at the Phoenicia Hotel.

“Combating corruption is necessary at all levels because it harms the reputation of the State as a whole, and impacts the citizen's trust in its official institutions and obstructs the work process,” he added.

The President pointed to his Oath of Office where he stressed the need to transform the Lebanese government into an e-government, “it is part of my economic reform plan because this is the gateway into modernizing the State to combat corruption and also to reduce brain drain," he said.

The Digital Government Conference 2018 brings together digital leaders from across the Lebanese government, private sector and academia to share lessons learned from the delivery of existing digital projects, discuss innovative international trends aimed at transforming the relationship between citizen and the state, and critically assess the current strategic approach to e-government with a view of adopting best international practices for the future delivery of government digital information and services.

Enough talk and no actions by all established parties that strive on corruption, inefficiency and nepotism. An antiquated government system, artificial red tapes, embedded corruption at all levels, and appalling communication and transportation infrastructure are what shocking Lebanon's economy and hindering the creative energy of the new generation. An E-government, transparent processes, streamlined processes, and elimination of corrupt middle-men can be easily implemented and provide meaningful jobs to college graduates. Instead of empty slogans, let us hear the ten practical steps and implementation timeline Aoun or any political party are proposing instead of empty slogans. It is amazing that even in these election times, no political party has provided any concrete plan to modernize economy, e-government and improve transparency and accountability.
