Cocaine production in Colombia, the world's top producer of the drug, soared in 2017 by an estimated 31 percent amid a big jump in farmland devoted to its cultivation, a U.N. report said Wednesday.

The U.N. Office on Crime and Drugs said about 423,000 acres (171,000 hectares) in Colombia were illegally planted with coca last year, a 17 percent increase from the previous year.
