5.3 Quake Rattles Dominican Republic

A 5.3-magnitude quake rattled the Dominican Republic early Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey, but there were no immediate reports of damage in the Caribbean nation.

The epicenter of the medium-sized earthquake was 55 kilometers west of the capital Santo Domingo, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), the USGS said.

The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with its much poorer neighbor Haiti, where a catastrophic earthquake in January 2010 leveled the capital and killed more than 225,000 people.
