Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc on Tuesday threw its support behind ex-PM Fouad Saniora in the ongoing controversy over corruption.

Lauding “the financial, administrative and political presentation that ex-PM Fouad Saniora made during his press conference,” the bloc called for “dealing with its numbers and facts away from overbidding and the known alignments.”

“The bloc reiterates its support for ex-PM Saniora and condemns the campaigns targeting the economic and political approaches that he represents along with all those who dedicated themselves to serving Lebanon and the state alongside martyr premier Rafik Hariri,” Mustaqbal said in a statement issued after its weekly meeting.

It accordingly called for “an end to spiteful policies” in order to “spare the country further embroilment in futile debates and battles.”

On Friday, Saniora described the issue of the “missing” $11 billion as a “farce,” as he announced that those “setting up mini-states inside the state” are the real corrupts, in an apparent jab at Hizbullah.

At a press conference he held to respond to remarks by MP Hassan Fadlallah, Saniora added that the 11 billion dollars in question were spent on interest hikes, treasury loans for Electricite Du Liban, and wage hikes and recruitment expenses for the armed forces.
