Defense Minister Elias Bou Saab said the Lebanese army is not responsible for the budget deficit but “successive economic policies and waste of public funds are.”

In a televised press conference, Bou Saad said “the current economic situation is due to successive economic policies. The military institutions and the Lebanese army are not responsible for the budget deficit.”

“It’s true that the budget allocated for the defense ministry is the largest in the government, but it’s not as mistakenly reported responsible for the deficit,” he added.

“Lebanese must know that the military institutions are tasked with protecting the country and security. They go to the front unaware of what their fate could be,” added Bou Saab.

He said his Ministry should decide on reducing military expenditures based on the spending needs of the army.

Sure they are!!!! The Lebanese military are the biggest waste of money. They have outrageous salaries, benefits and pensions. 90% of the defense ministry budget goes on salaries and benefits and nothing is left to equip the army with any meaningful weapons.

The military are privileged, corrupt, and live a life of luxury in a country on the brink of economic collapse.

No they are not but somehow you do not see a general in Lebanon living less than the life of a millionaire. If they are truly protecting the citizen then why are streets blocked for their living space and why do they have their own laws and apply them when it suits them? Sorry minister the millitary since its inception in Lebanon has been and will continue to be a tool for the ruling class and not one that as you stated is there to protect the citizen. I walk the street without the need to have your 25 body guards and why? because unlike you or your military do not pose a threat to anyone.

They should start with the government employees double dipping from the government till, to help with the deficit. For example corrupt civil servants getting pay and benefits as members of Parliament and also as ministers, especially those who've been forever campaigning and they'd promised separation of Parliament membership from the government portfolios, you know what I mean?
