As UNIFIL marked the 46th anniversary of its establishment today, Tuesday, its leadership renewed calls for all actors to "put down their weapons, recommit to Security Council Resolution 1701, and work toward a political and diplomatic solution," a statement said.

“Resolution 1701 has been challenged by current events, but it remains as relevant and necessary as ever,” said Head of Mission and Force Commander Aroldo Lázaro. "We call on all parties to commit to implementing the resolution in full. Our more than 10,000 peacekeepers continue their critical monitoring, de-escalation, and liaison work, and we stand ready to support a peaceful resolution to the current situation," he added.

The mission did not hold its yearly ceremony at its headquarters in Naqoura, as peacekeepers are "focused on accomplishing their mission amidst the breaches of the cessation of hostilities in violation of resolution 1701 along the Blue Line," a UNIFIL statement said.

Nonetheless, Lieutenant General Lázaro paid tribute to the civilian and military peacekeepers who have served with the mission over the years, including over 330 who have died serving for peace.

“The sacrifice of those who lost their lives here is not in vain,” Lázaro continued. “Our efforts today, in these very difficult circumstances, are a tribute to their memories. Their sacrifice motivates us to continue our work toward de-escalation in the short-term, and peace in the long-term,” he added.

He also commended the work of the more than 10,000 military peacekeepers from 49 countries who, alongside their civilian colleagues, and despite relentless and daily exchanges of fire, have "stayed their course in monitoring the fast-evolving situation in south Lebanon, maintaining high operational tempo and visible presence, and in assisting local communities," the statement said.

The United Nations Security Council established the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, with Resolutions 425 and 426 on 19 March 1978. The mission’s mandate was expanded with Resolution 1701 following the 2006 war.

Resolution 1701 is a kiss of death for Lebanon. Insuring permanent Hizbollah occupation and misery. Hizbollah/Hamas arms are what keeping Netanyahu in power instead of prison, and what is preventing permanent regional peace that US, Gulf, Europe & Jews want. Only then Israel/Palestinian trust is restored leading to massive international investments to transform Gaza into vibrant economy and free society benefiting Palestinians & Israelis and promoting integrated economy and political system. Lebanon must do its part and disarm Hizbollah (Iran's foreign Legion) and Hamas, a prerequisite for permanent regional peace, and therefore key actor. If Egypt got $50 billion aid package, Lebanon should get even more after disarming Hizb, restoring full sovereignty and implementing reforms, as prosperous and democratic Lebanon is also essential for regional peace. Massive aid to Gaza, Lebanon and Egypt are a fraction of cost of more wars and radicalism. Let us choose peace & Prosperity!

Permanent regional peace will quickly results in the disintegration of the mullah reign in Iran. Their massacres and oppressions since the Green Revolution have transformed Iran and its great culture into a giant prison for mind and soul. Recent events showed their vulture nature stuffing Hamas Taliban with arms for their reign of terror, but now letting Gaza bleed alone not even contributing a cent to UNRWA or food supply. No greater evil on earth, spreading arms and misery all around from Yemen to Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. No people can be oppressed forever. Soon they will be hanged by a whole generation of Iranian that had their future and dignity stolen by these medieval vultures of death and destruction.
