14 people were injured in clashes in the Libyan city of Benghazi, a Libyan newspaper reported Wednesday.

the BBC had earlier quoted eyewitnesses as saying that Benghazi was "rocked by protests."

The eyewitnesses told BBC that the unrest had been triggered by the arrest of a lawyer who is an outspoken critic of the government.

BBC said that while the lawyer was reportedly released later, the demonstrations allegedly continued.

It said there was no independent confirmation of the protests in Benghazi, but eyewitnesses say that at one stage some 2,000 people were involved.

They said stones were tossed at police who have reportedly responded with water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets.
