A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck western Algeria's Chlef region on Wednesday, but did not cause any injuries or infrastructure damage, the Centre of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics Research said.

Tremors were felt up to 200 kilometers away in the capital Algiers, as well as in the neighboring region of Ain Defla.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 03:18 GMT, was eight kilometers to the east of the town of Beni Haoua.

Five thousand people perished in a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Chlef on October 10, 1980.
