Change and Reform bloc MP Farid al-Khazen had suggested severing ties between the Free Patriotic Movement and Hizbullah, revealed a leaked U.S. Embassy cable published exclusively in Al-Akhbar Thursday.

The MP also stressed the need to diminish Hizbullah’s military powers, said the Wikileaks cable dated July 2006.

On July 13, 2006, a day after the eruption of the July 2006 war, Khazen expressed his anger with Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s “lies” during the national dialogue when he vowed to maintain the peace at the Blue Line.

He also said that the memorandum of understanding between the Free Patriotic Movement and Hizbullah would be more difficult to defend.

In another cable, Khazen told a U.S. diplomat that with the eruption of the war, Hizbullah had put aside its responsibilities towards Lebanon and launched “an unnecessary crisis” that would have regional repercussions.

Furthermore, he said that Hizbullah “is employing powers that should be in the hands of the state”.

Four days later, the MP described to a U.S. diplomat Hizbullah’s actions as “irresponsible and duplicitous” proposing that the FPM should cut its ties with the party.

He also suggested the formation of a national unity government that would confront the challenges, revealing that FPM leader MP Michel Aoun was ready to cooperate with the government of Fouad Saniora.

Khazen also demanded that the Unites States pressure Israel to avoid targeting Sunni, Christian, and Shiite areas in the war, but to only focus on attacking Hizbullah.
