General Security Members Detained in Syria for an Hour, Suleiman Slams Border Violations

President Michel Suleiman slammed on Monday the Syrian security forces’ detention of two general security members from Lebanon, deeming the action a violation of international law.

Syrian security forces infiltrated the northern region of Wadi Khaled on Monday and detained two general security members for an hour, several media outlets reported.

LBC TV said around 20 Syrian soldiers opened fire at Jisr al-Qmar, which damaged the customs building and a number of cars, and continued marching toward the area.

Al-Joumhouria newspaper reported that the Syrian forces threatened the Lebanese security forces, accusing them of allowing gunmen to open fire at Syrian territories.

LBC pointed out that the Syrian forces detained a member of the Lebanese customs and two general security members and hit them before dragging two of them into Syrian territories for an hour.

Suleiman added that the incident violates the duty of the two countries to coordinate their activity along the border.

He hoped that the necessary investigations will be held and those responsible will be held responsible for their actions in order to avert similar incidents in the future.

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel meanwhile said in comments to Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) that the Syrian border violations are “unacceptable.”

“The Syrian army has no right to detain anyone,” he said.

The minister urged the cabinet to address the issue during its session, which is scheduled to convene Tuesday at the Baabda Palace.

The General Security said later in a statement that the Syrian army was pursuing gunmen, who fired a rocket at the emigration and passports center near the border, which wounded two Syrian border police.

The Syrian security forces infiltrated al-Buqaiaa crossing and detained two members from the area’s general security center, the statement said.

It added that they were released later.

The general security immediately opened an investigation into the incident.

Buqaiaa is located in the Akkar region, 185 kilometers north of Beirut.

Syrian troops have carried out a number of cross-border raids into Lebanon since the outbreak of the revolt against the regime of President Bashar Assad in March 2011, sparking fears of a spillover of the conflict.

And where was the Lebanese army or the mighty Hizb here? On lunch? Oh they are vocal when an Israeli plane flies over and Shepard gets taken by Israel but they are always missing or they loose there voice when something like this happens.

Thumb mobious125 02 July 2012, 10:48

....that would be the Shepard of the farming type and not the mass effect Shepard....just to clear that up.

Syria never took us seriously maybe we should fire back at them..where is the so called mouquawami to defend Lebanon?

Thumb bigsami 02 July 2012, 22:12

Rafik may have gotten the Syrians out but unfortunately they had plan B in place: 1) Get HA to assassinate those who got in their way (including Rafik) 2) Stockpile HA with weapons 3) Recapture Lebanon indirectly through their proxy HA. So maybe the Syrian regime is not in Lebanon but they sure are under HA.

Missing allouchi 02 July 2012, 22:15

bigsami, I agree with you a 100%

Thumb bigsami 02 July 2012, 22:32

Of course allouchi.....we both know as do most Lebanese HA's existence is not as a 'resistance' to protect Lebanon against Israel but rather for Syria to maintain it's grip on the country. Syria's authoritarian regime wants to insure the same rule/laws applies to Lebanon and what better representation with similar ideology than HA to play that role.
As much as I hate the Israelis for their crime against humanity (Palestinians), I don't see HA/Assad a better alternative.

You guys notice how the Syrian/Iranian mouth peace like FT and the rest of the bunch are always absent/quite when the Syrian thugs violate Lebanese sovereignty?

Missing peace 02 July 2012, 17:15

they are too busy defending bassil !

Thumb benzona 03 July 2012, 00:10

FT = Mowaten = sabulokov = lebanese@ Perhaps we should simply ignore this person. Naharnet should partially provide the IP address of each user. That would solve the issue.

typical anwser of the weak....

All these incidents are Bachar's desires to scare off potential tourists this summer. Guess what, it's working! Plenty of people I know won't be going to Lebanon... Well done M8 governement for you (in)actions.

Suleiman needs to file this at the UN as a gross violation of Lebanese sovereignty.

way for the syrian regime to garner up the sympathetic vote in this country

Thumb primesuspect 02 July 2012, 19:15

You make it sound like we are israel's friends. Obviously we aren't! M14 is for an independent Lebanon. M8 is for Syria and Iran's hegemony over lebanon.

I remember when I was child I was already fascinated about Lebanon even I wasn't born there and I had never been there before. Everythink I heard was about the war and how awful the country was but somehow I believed Lebanon isn't all about those ugly things. It has a beautiful landscape , great history and somehow beautiful people. Lebanese witnessed so much trouble but they didn't lose their will to live and to celebrate. That's in my eyes what makes Lebanon so different from other places even if there is a mess everywhere and people would even offer their live for stupid politics it still remains special. I really hope lebanese can overcome their division and unite because you have the most beautiful country in the world . Don't sell your soles to Iran , Israel , Syria or The West just care about Lebanon .

best regards Mike
