Syrian Defense Minister and Assef Shawkat Killed in Damascus Blast, FSA Claims Responsibility

A suicide bomber on Wednesday struck at the heart of Syria's security apparatus, killing the country's defense minister and President Bashar Assad's brother-in-law, state television said.

The attack, which for the first time in a 16-month anti-regime uprising targeted members of Assad's inner core, came hours ahead of a U.N. Security Council debate on Syrian sanctions, when a showdown between Western powers and Russia and China is expected.

Officials said the bomber struck as ministers and security officials were meeting at the heavily guarded National Security headquarters in Damascus.

Defense minister General Daoud Rajha and Assad's brother-in-law Assef Shawkat were killed and interior minister Mohammed al-Shaar and General Hisham Ikhtiyar, head of National Security, were wounded, the channel and security officials said.

Later on Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human rights and Hizbullah’s al-Manar television reported that General Hassan Turkmani, the head of the Syrian regime's crisis cell and a former defense minister, had also died in the blast.

Meanwhile, Al-Jazeera television reported the death of Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar in the attack, as sources told Al-Arabiya that Hafez Makhlouf, the head of the investigation department of the general intelligence, was also killed.

Syria's rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

The FSA command "announces the good news of the outstanding operation this morning that targeted the National Security headquarters and the killing" of the officials "responsible for barbaric massacres," it said in a statement.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights called Shawkat's death "a severe blow to the Syrian regime since he played the main role in operations by regular forces to crush the revolution."

State television reported that Assad had appointed Fahd al-Freij as new defense minister, while Syria's army vowed to "continue fighting terrorism."

"The terrorist act increases the armed forces' determination to clean the country of terrorist groups," it said in a statement.

Rajha, a Christian, was defense minister, deputy army chief and deputy head of the Council of Ministers. Assad himself is overall commander of the military.

Shawkat was deputy defense minister and a former military intelligence chief.

The National Security branch headed by General Ikhtiyar is a linchpin of Syria's security apparatus.

The brazen attack on regime insiders came as battles raged across Damascus and after the FSA -- comprising defected soldiers and civilians who have taken up arms against Assad's forces -- warned the government to "expect surprises."

Columns of black smoke rose over the capital, with the Local Coordination Committees, which organizes anti-regime protests on the ground, reporting that Qaboon and Barzeh neighborhoods were bombarded by loyalist forces.

It also said there was less traffic than normal in the city where fighting has raged since Sunday, with the rebels announcing a full-scale offensive dubbed "the Damascus volcano and earthquakes of Syria."

Regime forces and the FSA clashed in the al-Midan and Zahira districts of Damascus as well as at Assali south of the city, the LCC said.

Rebel forces on Tuesday said the battle to "liberate" Damascus had begun, as heavy fighting raged with the regime using helicopter gunships in the capital for the first time.

FSA spokesman Colonel Kassem Saadeddine had said on "victory is nigh" and the struggle would go on until the city was conquered.

"We have transferred the battle from Damascus province to the capital. We have a clear plan to control the whole of Damascus. We only have light weapons, but it's enough."

"Expect surprises," Saadeddine added.

Russia gave notice that it would not back a Western-backed U.N. resolution on the crisis as it would mean taking sides with a revolutionary movement.

"Now the Damascus Volcano, the battle for the capital and a decisive battle have been declared in Syria. Adopting the resolution would mean outright support of a revolutionary movement," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Moscow.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said by contrast that Syria is tipping into chaos and collapse, and that a strong U.N. Security Council stand is needed to push for the creation of a transition government.

"We are aware of reports that the Syrian Defense and Deputy Defense Ministers have been killed and a number of others injured by an apparent suicide bombing in Damascus," Hague said in a statement issued in London.

"This incident, which we condemn, confirms the urgent need for a Chapter VII resolution of the U.N. Security Council on Syria."

In Beijing, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon urged the Security Council to act to stop the bloodshed in Syria, after holding talks ahead of a vote on fresh sanctions.

Ban said the Security Council must unite and take action on the "very serious" situation in Syria, after meetings with China's President Hu Jintao and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.

The Security Council will on Wednesday vote on a Western resolution renewing the U.N. mission in the country that calls for sanctions if the regime does not pull back heavy weapons.

China has twice joined Moscow during the 16-month conflict to block resolutions critical of Damascus.

Representatives of the Syrian National Council (SNC) -- an umbrella opposition group -- met ambassadors from the 15-nation Security Council, including Russian envoy Vitaly Churkin, to press them to back sanctions.

The current 90-day U.N. mission in Syria ends on Friday, and if no resolution is passed by then, it would have to shut down this weekend, diplomats say.

The Observatory, meanwhile, said at least 93 people were killed nationwide on Tuesday, among them 48 civilians, adding to its toll of more than 17,000 dead since the revolt erupted in March last year.

we are entering the danger zone now, so I suggest to all to prepare for the worst:
- raad comments of yesterday means hizbushaitan is going in that direction, i.e. take over militarily
- all aoun declarations go in that direction.
- the deteriorating situation of the assad regime ( minister of interior and minister of defense hurt and maybe dead in today's explaosion)
they now know they will loose the next election and they want to keep the power in lebanon otherwise they are history.

Thumb lebanon_first 18 July 2012, 10:40

The only solution for lebanon is that M8 and M14 start working together in one gouvernment, like in the days of rafic hariri. It is a mistake to marginalize 40% of the population either way.

If they cant work in a gouvernment together, i say let us divide Lebanon.

The only issue remaining now is not whether Assad will survive, but the means he will choose to leave. He could go out with a bang by deploying chemical weapons against the Syrian people, destroy as much as he can like Saddam did to Kuwaiti oil fields before he left them, or Assad and his hinchmen could abandon Damascus and retreat, over night, to their redoubt in the Alawi Mountains and Latakia to hold out there. It would be difficult to get to Assad on his home turf, but, eventually the law catches up to all who would break it.

They visited death and destruction on people as if to do so were like a walk in the park. With great indifference to the pain they caused, and now they are paying the price for those deeds.

But we should refrain. We should be a people of the law and when people break the law of their country or the law of nations that prevent genocide and occupation of neighboring countries, then they should be punished by the law, not by the suicide bomber. This is barbaric and we should never cheer barbarism as it may yet come back to visit us if we do.

2- The explosion occurred in a high security area.
3-I saw expert reporters explain how Bashar's high security members usually stay in the shadows, and will never a meeting all together.

Suicide bombings kill people, but they do not take over a country. There has to be large defections against the regime to start losing control of large sections of the country, which has not happened.

Israel, the west, and Arab puppets want ONLY the regime to be weakened. They do not want the Ikhwan to be able take over the whole country. If the Ikhwan take over Syria, then Jordan is threatened, and then the Gulf kings are threatened. HA will probably then ally themselves with the Ikhwan if that happens. For the M14 Christians...be careful what you wish for.

What prevent Shawkat from having his security agency grab a guy, with same body size as shawkat, from the street, have a plastic surgeon do a complete face make-over on him, to make him look like Shawkat (It is easily done nowadays). Call for a security meeting, leak the info on the security meeting to FSA members, so that they can bomb it, and have Shawkat look-a-like be present in that meeting so that he will be killed in the bomb...FSA would think they succeeded in killing Shawkat, in the meantime, the real Shawkat - in disguise - goes to Tartus, where a submarine is waiting for him, to take him to a Russian dutcha where he will live the rest of his life in incognito...
Does it sound far-fetchted to you???, i bet you said the same thing about Chaker El Absi, who has half the brain, and zero resources...

Thumb min-canada 18 July 2012, 15:52

Sure Anon. And Elvis is still alive.... Sorry man. I know you don't want to believe the news, but its OK. Even if he is on a submarine going to Russia, he is out of the way. Same thing for the Syrian people. Maybe Bashar is with him too?

Missing youssefhaddad 18 July 2012, 15:49

It could have been a hit from Bashar to eliminate the people who could incriminate him and a part of bashar's exit plan.

Thumb min-canada 18 July 2012, 16:00

bigsami I hear you, but careful. We need to not corner our partners in the country in a way that their only way out is hell for everyone. We need to be able to talk. The more you win the more you have to be patient and caring about the opposition to make sure we remain one country.

Yeah...you go beleive the news...you probably thought Saddam had WMD too and a nuclear bomb in the making because the news in 2003 told you so.
And you probably thought Chaker El Absi didn't have the brainpower to put a mock Chaker El Absi character in front of TV cameras - before the Nahr-El Bared fighting broke out - which shows how he planned his escape months in advance.
As i said it before - if it helps end bloodshed, let it be...
No this exit is only for those that have too much blood on their hand that Russia would be too embarrased to take in publicly. For Bashar, i think his end would be political with political asylium in Russia.

Thumb min-canada 18 July 2012, 16:08

I hope that HA had nothing to do with the bombing in the Burgas airport. We don't need this please.

we are all so conspiratorial!! I remember a story about a high ranking official in a Middle Eastern country who died of a sudden heart attack. The talk the next day was to wonder why he chose that certain day for his heart attack. Ah, the conspiracy!!

I have seen way too many news sources reporting this to think that it didn't happen. Well maybe it didn't. Maybe JFK was not really assasinated, Elvis lives, and the men didn't really land on the moon but sent film in from the Arizona desert. All that is possible too, but not probable. These guys are done, as is the Assad Regime.

With no foreign correspondent in Syria, a tightly secured area, with blast site immediatly cordoned-off, who could tell what really happened??? Except from the blast and the cloud of smoke that could be seen from mile away, what other tangible information could be verified by the media? all that has been reported on this story is either from people living miles away from the blast scene, or from Syrian state TV which are fed info by Bashar Security agencies...so how could you be certain about the news?

Thumb min-canada 18 July 2012, 17:56

Yes Anon. YOu are right i WASN'T THERE TO SEE IT MYSELF SO i CAN'T TELL. You have stomped me. You win. They are alive and well and it was all a joke to embarrass the FSA. Tomorrow they will all come out and laugh at us all. We will look life fools and you will be vindicated. BTW< Assad has left Damascus. but I was not there either so I can't be sure of course.

Are you sure I am not bashar trying to saw disinformation here just for fun?

To Anonym(e)TexasUsa: Elvis is also still alive, disguised as a Celine Dion's husband... If you speak french (spelling of Anonyme), go and watch "Gross Fatigue", and have fun, and leave those stories to B-movies.

In the interim, wake up, and check the facts. The General Aoun (whom I was a fervent supporter in 1989-1990), continues to make a series of wrong bets, or bets on the wrong horses (Saddam in 1990, Bashar in 2012). In 2006, his strategic mistake was to undermine our own Spring, the Cedar revolution. For what ?

Let me know if you like Carole Bouquet in "Grosses Fatigues"

Thumb min-canada 18 July 2012, 17:37

With all the different forces going one against the other, undermining the security of Syria, Lebanon and probably the whole middle east, at least this time no one is blaming Israel, although I'm sure it won't be too long before that guy in the rat hole starts with his strange outbursts.

Why are you insulting me by siding me with Aoun???
As for your mocking about my suggestion...yeah sure...nothing of that sort happen....Chaker El Absi didn't fool the public by setting up a character to pose as him...Right????
And the American security agencies didn't fabricate a nuclear link between Saddam & an African Nation to make the case against Saddam at the UN more urgent.
Although no one should go paranoid about it, but conspiracies do exist in real life...It is naive people like you who gobbles whatever information they are served which makes it easier for them to get away with it.
