President Michel Suleiman stressed on Saturday that the tripartite formula of the people, army and the resistance requires some clarification, noting that the goal behind the defense strategy is to “confronting Israeli aggression against Lebanese territories.”

“We have already stressed several times in ministerial statements the importance of the cooperation among the people, the army and the resistance but we need to clarify the means of cooperation,” Suleiman said from his summer residence in Beiteddine.

He pointed out that the only goal behind setting a defense strategy is to “resist Israeli aggression against Lebanese territories.”

On Wednesday, Hizbullah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah called on the national dialogue committee to agree on a “liberation strategy” as well as on a defense strategy.

Suleiman stressed the importance of cooperation among all political parties to preserve the country, calling on all Lebanese foes to attend the upcoming national dialogue session on August 16.

“All the political and national figures should seek to preserve Lebanon’s stability and local and foreign sovereignty… Through the implementation of the Taef accord and cooperation” Suleiman said.

The president pointed out that priority is for stability amid the turmoil in the Middle East.

He noted that the cabinet and the dialogue committee should set the country’s policy referring to the Baabda Declaration, which was adopted by the rival leaders to safeguard the country from the negative impacts from the crisis in the neighboring countries.

Suleiman postponed the dialogue last month after the opposition tied its participation to a government decision to provide security agencies with the so-called telecom data to help them investigate assassination attempts against MP Butros Harb and Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea.

The telecom data has since been handed over to the security apparatuses.

Hizbullah MP Mohammed Raad’s announcement that the national defense strategy was not currently necessary because Lebanon was still in the liberation stage, was another reason for the March 14 alliance’s boycott of the last session on July 24.

Suleiman reiterated that stability in Lebanon can be only achieved through implementing the Baabda Declaration that rejects the use of Lebanon as a sanctuary, a transit point or a base for the smuggling of arms and armed men, to commit to the resolutions of international legitimacy and to continue efforts to agree on a national defense strategy, and to commit to the implementation of the Taef accord.

Mr President,
are we a state? if yes, then our army should be the sole holder of heavy weapons at least.
we can understand the need for resistance, bu that resistance should be managed by the army and under its wing and not the other way round.
our problem is that a group has acquired weapons beyond what our army has, and they follow a foreign agenda, thus putting the whole country at risk: this is dangerous and unacceptable.

There is something in Nasrallah's speech that you seem to have missed. He says that HA liberated the south, and under other circumstances, the victorious liberator would have taken over the country. He explicitely rabba7 jmileh that he didnt "fully" take over teh country. He thinks the country belongs to HA now and that he is being nice. Countering him upfront would lead to civil war. This is what Sleiman has to deal with.

What would be the harm of holding a referendum regarding the resistance? i think lebanon is in a liberation stage! Liberation from the resistance that is! khallas the south is 90% liberated now we can liberate the 10% through diplomatic channels followed by a peace treaty.

Huh?? “resist Israeli aggression against Lebanese territories.”... because their planes sometimes surveil hezbollah activities??? Dissarm Hezbollah and israel won't give a damn about us! Hezbollah is the cause of our trouble!!

thepatriot guarantees that by disarming Hezbollah Israel won't give a damn about us, regardless of how much Lebanese territory the Israelis occupy. After all, who cares abiyt territory that is not thepatriot's own? thepatriot wants to live in peace especially that Bekfaya (or who knows where in Free Lebanon), where he owns property, is not occupied by anybody. And when thepatriot guarantees something like this we know we can trust him and trust the Israelis always. Now Bashir Gemayel called for the 10,452 sq. km, give or take a few minuscule kilometers. This guy thepatriot is one hell of a historian and strategist. What would March 14 do without great minds like thepatriot's?

Hahaha.... Deares triptik... Seems to me that you have been living in a cave with your master... Not an inch of Lebanese territory is occupied according to all maps back to the French mandate, and untill the proof of the contrary. Now, the Syrians themselfs did dot clear up if the territories were theirs or Lebanese, and said they would reveal it only once Israel backs off... hahahaha... A good strategy for the poor sheep like yourself to persuade us that we need "the Resistance" to liberate our occupied land... just read your basic UN resolutions, study your case and get back to me then... sheep!

The Lebanese Army should defend against ALL foreign aggression. Both of our neighbors have been responsible form most of the aggression on Lebanon. Denying that Syria has been responsible for death and destruction within Lebanese territory would be an injustice to your position and role as the President of the Republic

Why don't you all say as it really is: No one cares about Lebanon as a whole. All care about What they only control. May be the president things he is. Wake up Lebanese, get out of your cocoon and find a way. Today, you are all out of line. Sad, but true!
