A Kyrgyz border guard who shot dead five people including four colleagues was himself killed Tuesday as he put up resistance to the authorities, prosecutors said.

On Monday, a Kyrgyz soldier stationed near the Central Asian state's border with Kazakhstan had shot dead four fellow soldiers and the wife of one of the victims before fleeing.

The solder identified as Kulbarat uulu Balbai was located early Tuesday morning in a mountain gorge near the picturesque Lake Issyk-Kul on the border with Kazakhstan.

"The suspect put up resistance as he was being detained and was killed by a search party as a result," Kyrgyzstan's military prosecutors said in a statement.

The border region shared by Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and China has seen a wave of violence in the past two months.

Police in Kazakhstan said last week they had discovered the charred and stabbed remains of 11 bodies scattered over large stretches of a remote park popular with international climbers and hikers.
