Thousands of supporters of Hizbullah protested on Saturday in the southern Lebanese town of Bint Jbeil against a film mocking Islam.

"This film that insults the Prophet is not merely a trivial creation carried out by a group, but American politics intended to be disseminated to the Western world," Hizbullah MP Nawaf al-Moussawi told the crowd.

Women in black chadors carried colorful Islamist flags alongside young children holding the Qoran, the Muslim holy book.

Moussawi ruled out a backlash against Christians in Lebanon, saying: "We participated with our Christian brothers wholeheartedly in the mass given by Pope Benedict XVI."

Several participants held posters of Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah alongside pictures of Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose ruling clan hails from the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiism.

Some attacked Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir, who has gained notoriety over the past year for his anti-Damascus stance.

"This Sheikh who instructs Muslims on the right path, what did he do for the south and for Lebanon? Did he say a word condemning the Israeli attacks?" asked demonstrator Mohammed Ali Bazzi.

"His every move was to disarm the resistance (Hizbullah), which is Israel's first demand," he told Agence France Presse.

On Friday, al-Assir held his own smaller rally in Beirut, where participants waved Syrian revolution flags, alongside Islamic flags and a large Turkish flag.

Lebanon is deeply divided between a Western-backed opposition, which supports the Syrian revolt, and the ruling majority led by Hizbullah, which is staunchly pro-Damascus.

Hezbollah shouldn't get all the credit for the departure of Israeli army, there was other groups fighting the Israelis even before the hezbollah was born, also nobody started to oppose hezbollahs arms until it was turned on fellow Lebanese and people realized the real threats that face them, which are the internal threats, Hezbollah just wants power, they don't care about meqdad or people dying in Syria. They are just like bashar they got the power and now let's see if you folks are goingmto do anything about it

I'm surprised these guys are holding bashar on the flag. Didn't they see all the mosques he destroyed in Syria, even churches, what the people torturing people and making them kiss bashers picture or take him as a god, I'm pretty these monkeys have YouTube. See the difference between today and Hamelin massacre, is all the lies they used to tell people, there all getting exposed today, you have to be a devil worshipper to kill children and women like that, but the ones who support bashar in Lebanon they are the most despicable, i can understand if your inside Syria, everyone knows what this regime is capable of doing, no mercy whatsoever , itfooo alaik

When would these puppets understand that any guy with an iphone can make a movie and publish it? This doesn't mean that his country and its people support it!!! Are they expecting the us to suppress the freedom of speech and go back 500 years in time, where the actual arab world is?

Just go get a life, let your women decide for themselves, and try to add something to humanity other than hate and ignorance

Hey there any Lebanese on this page? I'm new here and I've been reading your comments and while some are insightful none are hopeful. It saddens me to the core to see the complete lack of Lebanese identity. We the people of Lebanon should be united under one flag. We need to reject all our current leaders (good or bad) and start fresh. Start with the idea that we are all equal and we are all for Lebanon. We should all work for the common goal of strengthening our country. We start by putting the past behind us and look towards the future. What good does all the bickering do? How has it worked out for us in the past? We are stuck people and we need to get educated. We need to stand up for ourselves and fire all our leaders. With NO exception. If Lebanon was a company the CEO would have been fired a long time ago even if he was a "nice" guy. If we were to keep religion in our hearts and minds and out of our politics and government it sure would be a good start.
