Speaker Nabih Berri cabled on Friday Syrian President Bashar Assad on the occasion of the anniversary of the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War.

He said: “Your country is passing through one of its most difficult tests and I am certain that your experience in defying Israel will enable you to overcome your current crisis.”

“We are certain that you will meet the expectations of your people and set an example of democracy and freedom,” he added.

“We are certain that Syria will return as strong as it used to be in order to take restore its role in defying Israel and in order to build a secure and stable future,” continued the speaker.

Berri hoped that Syria will maintain its support for the Palestinian people in their struggle against Israel.

“On the occasion of the memory of the October war, I would like to salute the heroic Syrian people and its courageous army for their enduring accomplishment of breaking down enemy positions and raising the Syrian flag over the Golan Heights,” he said in the cable.

The speaker also sent a similar cable to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi.

The 1973 Arab–Israeli War was fought from October 6 to 25, 1973, between Israel and a number of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria.

"joumblat hariri and sanioura who were the most prosyrian people during the occupation and now they play patriots."

so how come you respect aoun who was the fiercest anti syrian and now lick their boots if that s not flip flopping, lol!!!!

Missing rudy 05 October 2012, 18:32

FT so you consider the syrian pull out in 2006 to be a real one?

they removed their she7ata army physically, but they didnt stop trying to manipulate every aspect of lebanese political life even for a second.

and they were extremely successful at it because basically the people representing them essentially work for the syrian government, no the lebanese people. they still do of course. assuming michel aoun didnt sell out, he is basically allied with the people who work for a foreign government. and what im saying is pretty much a well known fact here.

Who is making the good wine and great apples ( even sold to the heroic Syrian people from the Golan Height farmers ).
This is an idiotic tragedy

I swear to all mighty God i just cannot understand how could anyone let alone someone whi represent your country who is in the public eye on daily basis can so easily obssessively and compulsively lie and praise a family run businness like state who have TORTURED Lebanese and our beloved Lebanon for almost half a century, TFEH 3a aslak.

The Syrian regime puppets and lovers are starting to sound like the Iraqi regime's Baath leaders before they vanished for good.
By the way (unrelated to this article) did you guys/gals know that the AUB ranked # 300 in the world? That's actually not bad when you consider the tens of thousands of universities worldwide.

Thumb lebnanfirst 05 October 2012, 16:54

@mowaten
Enough kidding yourself and others. No foreign inspired uprising could have lasted this long and still going strong. That they are getting help from outside is not being disputed. Is the regime making its own tanks and weapons? No, Russia is supplying it with weapons with the Money coming from Iran.

Stop the bull and wake up and smell the roses. The Syrians have had enough even Lakhdar AlIbrahimi arrived at that conclusion now. Why do you insist on this unrealistic narrative?

Missing damascus79 05 October 2012, 17:21

It's no secret that Berri doesn't like assad or the baath party. He's simply playing along but even he knows that Assad's days are numbered. However, nobody should be any allusion that even after assad is gone, that these rats in Lebanon (berri and everyone else) are going to disappear as well. The head of the snake is in Tehran.

SHADES OF GREY
HA has an ideology, it is wilayat el fakih.
Aoun has an ideology: to return some of the rights of christian, to crush geagea, and to become president.
Frangieh has an ideology: be as az3ar as possible.
Berri has an ideology. Beat the hell out of HA in the popularity contest for chiites by employing as many chiites in the public sector as possible.

"I am certain that your experience in defying Israel will enable you to overcome your current crisis.”

When did Syria defy Israel? When did they fire a bullet to get back the Golan. I keep hearing he is trying to make deals with Israel while being friends with Iran and Hizbcocaine.

you don t get it: they ve waited to let the situation rot, to let the people desperate and chaos to settle thus extremist groups try to take benefits out of it so they can now say it is terrorists who are at the origin of everything...
at the beginning M8 used to say nothing was going on, simple located protests but the country was calm... now they come with their terrorist plot! sooo predictable from the beginning: it always happens the same way with dictators! just learn from history, nothing new!!!
plus europeans and the usa don t want to intervene to protect israel mostly....

Seriously, they haven't fired a bullet in 40 years while Lebanon has endured war after war from both within and Israel, while the scum in Syria either egged on the factions or did nothing. Berri can rot in the same hell as these guys.

media were only given access if they went with government agents...it baffles how you act like you do not know how the regime in Syria acted and still acts in Lebanon and you pretend that it is an angelic bunch of people who were misunderstood by the world. Get your facts straight this is a murderous the regime and has been a murderous regime since its inception. They hid behind the resistance but even that has come out against him (especially in recent days with Mishaal's remarks and Hamas's move out of Syria since the beginning of the revolution. We are not fools, we lived under this regime and we know how it operates now stop pretending like your master nasrallah..

Missing mohammad_ca 05 October 2012, 20:14

IF we go with your claim that it is the opposition that is planing these bombs...well hmm let's see, there's someone else in the region who puts people's lives at risk in order to "resist"...oh YEAH...you rmaster Nasrallah...you know how he hides bombs in residential areas and they end up going off and killing people....but of course these people died "fulfilling their jihadi purposes"....

Thumb lebnanfirst 05 October 2012, 22:39

You must be kidding, no rational person can believe what you are preaching. Look, the events speak for themselves. The rebels have so far offered upwards of 30,000 souls, surely you can not believe that those are ALL foreigners.
From your writing one can guess you are Shiite and so one can understand how you might feel however, don't let your feelings cloud the reality of what is going on in Syria. It is a majority supported revolution else it could never last this long and it is still not finished. Some common sense will go a long way.

Mowaten youv'e just successfully argued the case for the syrian revolution and all revolutions in the mid east where people have been oppressed for far too long by dictators. no difference between gadaffi ,mobarak, assad, saudis, etc.. all scum who supress their people for their own benefit. Even Iran which was once a cultural centre of the mid east with it's diveristy and freedom on display then enter the mullas..
