8 Dead, 78 Hurt as Powerful Car Bomb Hits near Ashrafiyeh's Sassine Square

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية

A powerful car bomb on Friday rocked a street adjacent to Sassine Square in Ashrafiyeh, leaving eight people dead, including Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan, chief of the Intelligence Bureau of the Internal Security Forces.

Seventy-eight people were wounded in the first such attack in the Lebanese capital since 2008, according to state-run National News Agency.

The booby-trapped car was parked outside a five-story building facing al-Farah Library, around 200 meters from the Phalange Party's Central House, NNA said.

An Agence France Presse photographer saw two apartment buildings devastated by the bombing. One building was ablaze as Red Cross workers evacuated bloodied casualties.

Balconies were torn off by the force of the blast, windows shattered and cars crushed by falling masonry.

Flying glass from the shattered windows wounded more than 20 people inside their apartments, NNA said.

The agency noted that the blast did not target the convoy of a political figure.

"We heard a powerful explosion. The earth shook under our feet," said Roland, 19, among a large crowd of army, rescue workers and onlookers at the scene.

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel later arrived on the scene to inspect the explosion's aftermath.

Georges Kettaneh, in charge of the Red Cross operation, said at least 37 people were wounded.

Relatives of employees at BEMO bank, whose windows were broken, dashed to the area to look for their children. "Where is Pierre?" one man cried, as a young woman searched for her mother in the rubble.

Nancy, aged 45, was in tears as she reflected on having nearly missed death.

"I was just coming home when I saw my house in flames. I would have been dead if I had stayed home."

A rescue worker, identifying himself as Rahmeh, said "this reminds me of attacks during the (1975-1990) civil war and after the war."

Prime Minister Najib Miqati said "the government and all its security and judicial authorities are on alert to unveil the circumstances of this blast, pursue and punish the perpetrators, and foil any attempts to drag Lebanon back to the episode of bombings."

Miqati also declared Saturday a day of national mourning and ordered the closure of state institutes, the lowering of flags to half-mast and the modification of TV and radio programming.

An extraordinary security meeting was also held at the Grand Serail to discuss the attack, while cabinet was expected to convene on Saturday morning to address the situation.

I dont get it when some of you say "not from the lebanese side". It's the lebanese dogs who sold themselves to whatever their purchaser's agenda is. I have left lebanon for good and will only return when the politicians who were involved in the first civil war are all trashed and some new blood is appointed. However, I feel that most of you actually want it that way. Lebanon is a temporary country. When the Assad and Iranian regimes are defeated, a big portion of lebanon will be lost as it becomes part of a larger whole.

@positivneutral agreed... it is aimed at the christian people ...no politician was near the site of explosion ...

they will say hizballah or isreal or syria or iran ... but who ?

this blast is very calculated and targeted to a specific group of people ... only those who want to send a domestic message or spread resentment in christians toward others parties ...would do this ..
let the blaming game begin

many reasons will come up ..many explanation and interpretation too... and the truth will get lost ...leaving the feeling of frustration increasing in every lebanese citizen

Default-user-icon I'm Staying (Guest) 19 October 2012, 17:18

Religion, Money and Media ... this is how they control you sheep.

If you leave, you will be a slave to another form of control thinking you've won freedom but "no one is more enslaved than he who thinks he is free".

You are manipulated by religion and enslaved by thinking that to earn your place in Paradise, you need to abide by their rules

You are enslaved by banks and money thinking that the ONLY way to survive is to earn money, buy stuff and pay your debts.

You are enslaved by media swallowing any bullshit they feed you from your shepperd politicians.

If you leave like many others did, you are giving away to terrorists (including our politicians) and you are abandoning any hope for the future of this country.

But no one will stop you ... go ahead and build yourself a "better" life elsewhere. Exchange one form of slavery for another.

I'm staying !

this is the start, and the upcoming days will show escalations.....

Israel is more likely to attack a hizbollah target - like their weapons depots, like they have done in the past.
Samaha was caught red handed - smuggling in explosives to stir sectarian strife. He confessed that Syria's president had specifically ordered that he target christian/sunni areas to stir trouble between them.

Like I said - I dont have proof who did it one way or the other, but when a car is stolen, you usually suspect the car thief - not the rapist!

As an Israeli I would like to send my Sincere condolences to the families of the victims and quick recovery to the wounded.
Those cowards who did it must be caught and brought to justice.
Its a Tragedy to Lebanon, as such a beautiful country suffers from so many problems and threats from inside and outside.
There is no justification that Lebanon should be threaten by evil powers. I was in Lebanon in 1982 as a soldier but wish once will come the day I'll be able to visit as a tourist and enjoy its beauty not holding a gun.
Wish Lebanon will return to be the Switzerland of the Med and not as a warm nest to terror groups who brought only death and destruction to Lebanon.

Go warrior. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. teach them Syrians a lesson they will never forget. Or isn't this what you March 14 warriors have been doing? And what lessons these are. ya lataftaf. Would you say the ASSad regime will fall next Thursday?

I would love to hear someone from either side dispute who did this? There is only 1 team that could have done this according the targeted man. RIP Chief Hassan. A true martyr who uncovered bombings like this one, but sadly this bombing caught up to him. I thank you for all the lives you have saved, and god send us someone to protect us.

Default-user-icon NorthernLight (Guest) 19 October 2012, 19:25

Pretty easy math, need to ask the sayed nasrallah in the rat whole if he knows how to add that up.

Thumb lebanon_first 19 October 2012, 19:31

This is the smartest comment today. WE SHOULD HAVE F..ING CCTV CAMS all over the country. We are too advanced today to keep blaming the Gods of Thunder for rain. We should scientifically find the culprits. Fullstop

Missing gcb1 19 October 2012, 19:32

Aaaand of course, a bomb happens, and we Lebanese do nothing but start pointing fingers, defend our politicians and insult the other political side.

The bombs work and cause chaos because we allow that to happen. When it happens, we accuse eachother and divide one another, which is the goal of the bomb in the first place (to divide us against one another).

So for those accusing Syria, Hezb, Iran, Israel, Samaha, get out of the country or go educate yourselves. The problem in Lebanon is division, sectarian division brought about by the sectarian system. THAT is what we should blame the bomb on.

this is so sad. poor lebanon caught up in, and torn apart by, its neighbour's brutality and problems. my prayers go out to all the victims and their friends/families. hopefully a peaceful future is possible for the civilians in syria, lebanon, israel.

May God have mercy on the soul of this true lebanese martyr, and to the rest of the victims today. Now look to the revealing PC of Samaha to disappear in mysrious ways soon, or to Hizbollah revealing an exclusive drone footage from 2004 to prove that the Israelis planned it.

Thumb anonymouslb 19 October 2012, 19:54

To all the bloggers on this site, to all the Lebanese who read this: it's about time you wake up! No more sweet talks, no more diplomacy, no more national dialogue table, no more BS...
If you're still home, you're a bunch of cowards with a dead brain.
If you don't have a weapon already, it's about fukin time you get one!
You should be in your street tonight, guarding your neighborhoods, searching cars and checking ids. If you're counting on the security forces to protect you, look at what happened today, they can't protect their own chief.
Enough waiting for the M14 wussies to tell you what to do. Enough expecting that M8 will stop facilitating terrorist attacks by the assad regime.
If you want to be safe, take your safety in your own hands. I'm not calling on attacking other neighborhoods, or for you to start a civil war, but in light of the tragic events if you're not going to take your security in your own hands don't blame but yourselves for what's going to happen.

I just want to say one thing or few. I read all your comments. Our politicins, they are ALL stupid and selfish. ALL of them. They don't care about Lebanon. Instead of talking and discussing reforms, economic stength, business opportunities strategies to survive in the region where all arouns us is falling apart, all they care are "seats" and their pockets. And now the most interesting thing is "we" the people are the stupids or the fools because we vote for them and we give them the power to manipulate with our lives. We have to know, we are the power, without us they are nothing. Just don't take a party and run after them and accuse the rest and kill each other. That's all. Let's outsmart everybody.

It is a target practice for the bigger events to take place, start packing and leave it is the best way, while you inner fight, no goverment or coutry behind. Shame on this country and its instiutions, you brag about your banking system, while everyone knows its a money laundering machine for your scams in Africa, no decency in your approach, no respect to your nature and land and yet you pretend you are civilized. You always blam other countries for your wars while you are the ones pushing to trigger, you adore killing, you despite life, you Are only good in " tourism" which is another form of scams, in fact your heavy destiny is filled with hate and this cycle will never end, instead of endless speeches and have tongues, better keep it low and stop victimizing your stupid lives. This country deserve the best and your are the worst virus living in it.

The guilty is the same one that murdered, Bashir, Renee Beyk, Karami, Joumblat, The Mufti Hasan Khaled, and many many more. They are sitting comfortably and killing. This is the only language they know.

Stop blaming Israel for everything and making Hezb look like saints. If Israel wanted to do anything like that, they would go after Nasrallah first.
