Bassil: Power-Generating Ships' Arrival Delayed over Govt. Failure to Meet their Costs

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

Energy Minister Jebran Bassil announced on Saturday that the arrival of the power-generating ships to Lebanon from Turkey has been delayed, reported the daily An Nahar on Sunday.

He explained that the government has failed to provide the cost of acquiring the ships.

He attributed the delay to “administrative reasons.”

The minister had signed in July a three-year contract to lease power-generating vessels from Turkey’s Karadeniz company.

The first ship was expected to arrive in Lebanon on November 11.

Head of the parliamentary energy committee MP Mohammed Qabbani criticized the delay, saying that Bassil had acted in an “unscientific manner” and that he had refused to turn to loans that would have helped provide the cost of the ships at low interest rates.

The cabinet had agreed in March to lease power-generating vessels that would help provide 700 megawatts of electricity for a period of three years.

Lebanon’s daily energy need is 2,300 megawatts, while its current power plants only provide it with 1,500.

Just one moment.
"Lebanon’s daily energy need is 2,300 megawatts, while its current power plants only provide it with 1,500."
So 1,500 + the 700 from the ships if/when they arrive is 2,200, still 100 short and certainly leaving no room for play if something goes wrong with a single generator, or there is an upsurge in use.
Something sees wrong somewhere.

If you weren't that stupid you would have read by now that I live in Manchester, ENGLAND, not Tel Aviv, ISRAEL

Missing phillipo 25 November 2012, 11:37

Apart from my last response, you are completely missing the point of my earlier comment.
If Lebanon needs 2300 MW and can only produce 1500 MW it must mean that there are power cuts all the time.

Many countries now are getting private companies and even individuals to use solar panels to produce energy with the surplus to their own usage being sold to the National Grid (Electricity Corp. or whatever). Lebanon being a Middle East Country with plenty of sunshine should be perfect for this type of joint venture.

Admit it guys, the country is screwed. I agree with Philippo here. Lebanon was always late with everything. What is Ironic they complain about the government and they are in it. People and the government complain about the government. So nobody is in control of the country. Like a ship sailing with no captain, or anyone in the control room.

He may not be a thief, but he has demonstrated himself as incompetent. If there is a problem, he should be addressing a way to fix it, not blame others. He is supposed to be the ENERGY minister--get the job done, or resign and get someone in there who can do the job.

And maybe he can explain why he needs the cash up front instead of getting soft loans while we are at, to address the thief part. He may not be a thief, but he is putting himself in a position for others to call him that.

Default-user-icon Le Phenicien (Guest) 25 November 2012, 15:38

Real men and great leaders say the buck stops here. Incompetent little boys and their senile father in laws always blame others for they constant failures.

Thumb lebanon_first 25 November 2012, 15:49

The root of the problem is that electricity is being underbilled. Even at 220LL per kw, it is too cheap. So EDL produces less electricity to loose less.
Generators' cost of electricity is about 800LL per KW. EDL should increase its rates to 800LL per KW, Electricity usage would be less and less rationing. those generator theives would get less money.

Missing peace 25 November 2012, 16:11

the question is: which politician makes money with generators?

Thumb thepatriot 26 November 2012, 15:46

The true problem if I may, is that almost 20% of the bills are not payed for, and almost 30% of the electricity is not even billed!
Sorry, no time to dig for the source but that was in a French survey (I posted a link months ago) that was done years ago... sceptics can google it (it's a very long and detaild report).

Thumb thepatriot 26 November 2012, 15:48

I would also like to add that the conclusion of this report is what drew away any chance for private companies to take over. Well... when you see that electrical bills collectors get shot at in some villages or neighborhoods...

There cannot and will not EVER be a viable power option whether it is Solar, Nuclear, Gas until EVERYONE pays their power bills.

No independant company would ever accept buying the Lebanese power sector in part or in whole because of this problem.

Also, Jebran Bassil is a thief, everyone knows it even M8 try to disrupt his plans knowing fully well he's trying to do.

Thumb lebanon_first 25 November 2012, 21:25

good point. dont forget, also Berri gets to employ his underworked constituents in EDL this way he gets reelected.

it only proves that it s in the interest of the politicians to keep it that way otherwise we wouldn t be discussing about it!

A long time ago the moon been discovered by the world and in Lebanon still having the electricity problem we are going to hold this problem for the whole life and even our kids will find it in their way too. Basil one question where is the goverment's money most of the Lebanese people paying the electricity bills so except south and dahyeh which is mostly Shia why they are exempt from paying aren't they lebanesse people and even they have 24 hours electricity access and the rest not so basil shut up and bring back the money that u have stolen from the goverment's

Missing abdul 26 November 2012, 09:13

Most of the world is thinking about how to get the power from other sources rather than the petrol because it will finish in future time . They are thinking about how to provide the best for their people and in Lebanon still thinking about how to pay the fuel expenses what's a joke. Imagine guys what will happen to The lebanese people in future time when there will no longer fuel is available. Living without power imagine.
