Reports: Blast at Suspected Hizbullah Weapons Depot in the South

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

An explosion at a suspected Hizbullah munitions depot shook the outskirts of the southern town of Tairharfa at dawn Monday, causing material damage only, media reports said.

According to the reports, the blast went of in an abandoned henhouse belonging to a man from the Haidar family. They said it was used as a storage facility for arms and ammunition.

Following the explosion that went off only 200 meters away from houses and residential buildings, Hizbullah members cordoned off the area to block access to journalists, they said.

The army later blocked the roads leading to the henhouse, as military and Internal Security Forces units arrived to the scene of the blast to investigate, the reports added.

The Army Command issued a statement later on Monday confirming the blast and saying that it has tasked an army committee to work with the concerned judicial authorities to investigate the incident.

Andrea Tenenti, who is a spokesman for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, said the mission was investigating the incident and would issue a statement later in the day.

The National News Agency quoted Tairharfa's mayor Hussein Qassem Haidar as saying that the blast was the result of the explosion of a rocket left over from the last war between Israel and Hizbullah in 2006.

He urged the state to clear the areas “contaminated with cluster bombs” so that the Lebanese could invest in their agricultural lands.

A similar explosion went off in the eastern city of Baalbek on October 3.

Hizbullah said at the time that three of its members were killed at the munitions depot in Nabi Sheet where old shells and ammunition as well as ordnance from the Israeli shelling of the area were gathered.

Baalbek is a stronghold of Hizbullah similar to southern Lebanon.

Been a long time since the last war, ammunition is becoming obsolete. Hope they won't start a new conflict just for having to use them.

Missing phillipo 17 December 2012, 10:24

The only way to stop them is not to rely on the Israeli Army, but on the Lebanese.

Cause the Israeli army failed to stop em...

Following the explosion that went off only 200 meters away from houses and residential buildings, Hizbullah members cordoned off the area to block access to journalists, they said.

this shows that
a-they fight from within residential neighborhoods...
b- the thug mentality of replacing the state and cordoning off areas like they are the king of the lands..
c- Iranian money is drying up.. and it is becoming more and more difficult for HA to store their weapons in a safe environment.

Missing phillipo 17 December 2012, 10:21

The whole world and UNIFIL have been saying for years that Hizballah are fighting from residential neighbourhoods. Perhaps now the Lebanese Government will believe it.
If the Lebanese Army allows them freedom of movement, in cordoning off areas within the country, then it is a great stain on the Republic of Lebanon.
Even when they had Iranian money, they used residential areas. Why do you think that in the last war Israeli troops had to enter the villages in the south of Lebanon?

same twisted logic when they killed officer 7ana in his hellicopter: "what was the helicopter doing there" barked aoun, as though it was flying in cyprus airspace and not in lebanese airspace.

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 18 December 2012, 12:05

ill type it again since you couldn't handle the truth...and had to report it..:

1- if a war with Israel broke out and the location of this depot found out and was bombed.. the damage would exceed a 200 meter radius. killing innocent people.
2- it is not HA's right to cordon off any area.. and cordoning off should be done by state security only.
3- i never heard of any weapons depot for the Lebanese army blowing up... maybe you are right.. (and i was just stating my opinion) and i should blame it on HA incompetence.
Iranian money did not lose 80% of its value... in fact it just leap leapfrogged the Kuwaiti dinar.
some people are too dense. get an education FT.

Nasrallah has his back against the wall. In the sectarian Sunni-Shi'ite war the Nasrallah-Assad alliance has taken an enormous hiding. When the Syrian rebels are finished with Assad's Alawis, they will take out Hezbollah!

In 2006, the Lebanese army should've joined with Israel to wipe out Hezbollah. Just think how much better Lebanon would be today, with no terrorists having veto power over your government (which effectively gives Iran veto power in Lebanon).

Umm ok, I'll say it again... Hizballah, Amal, n the SSNP are not fit to run a modern gov.

Hizballah is preoccupied with resistance, n chooses its leaders based on that. Their social policy is to build weapons, mosques, n hospitals.

Amal is a party riddled with za3ran. Their idea of security is showing up in groups to beat up n stab some1 that looked at em funny.

The SSNP, tho their original ideas make alota sense, are nothing more than a party for the protection of Syrian workers. While Amal is made up of Lebanese za3ran, SSNP branches out to include Syrian ones too!

Also I hate the salafis/saudis/Wahhabis n what not, I'm afraid of them! I'm not afraid of Iran, n I respect a country that can develop so highly in technology with sanctions that crippled a country like Iraq in the 90s! I can't understand ppl that wanna get closer to Israel but refue help from Iran. We need to leave Sunni Shia bullshit alone!

I hate bashar AND the "FSA". Fsa is made up of the same solders that crushed us under their boots! Where was their deep love for freedom then? And the irony of kings forcing calling for democracy in another country by sending weapons n fighters is too much to wrap my head around. I pray the khaliji spring starts soon!

Last but not least... I love lebanon n only want to c us like we were n are supose to b, n I think ur an idiot!

I'm sorry to disappoint you but, anybody can be a Zionist (look up the word in a dictionary). It doesn't mean that all Zionists are Israelis, and certainly not anti-moslem / anti-arab.
Comment like yours and those of people like Mowaten and FlameThrower, make many of us rethink our ideas about being even-handed in the problems of the Middle East.
If you stopped attacking people on a personal level, and instead stuck to facts, many more of us would understand exactly what your ideas are.
