Mufti Qabbani Rejects Harassment of Refugees, Criticizes Calls for Deporting Them

The Lebanese Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani rejected on Friday calls for the deportation of Syrian refugees out of Lebanon, expressing that it is a “duty to receive them and provide them with basic needs”.

“No politician or citizen in Lebanon has the right to harass Syrian refugees or demand their deportation,” the Mufti said in a released statement.

Qabbani added that Dar al-Fatwa has been actively aiding Syrian refugees that left the “war-torn country where their lives and interests are under threat, and came looking for safety in the neighboring country”.

"We urge all countries and Arab, Islamic, and international organizations to double their efforts in aiding the refugees,” Qabbani stated, explaining that Islam “calls for being good hosts to guests”.

According to the latest report issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 170,637 Syrian refugees have been registered in Lebanon while reports say that around 50,000 are still not registered.

The cabinet had voted on Thursday to adopt a three-part plan to tackle the influx of refugees from war-torn Syria. The plan will involve registration -- which means the counting of refugees -- medical and food aid, and the security and social consequences.

The government's relief plan requires more than 320 million dollars to provide the necessary humanitarian aid for the displaced and avert a security and social crisis.

now you remembered them after almost 2 years of conflict? Thank God the people were helping them long before you thought about them.

Missing fadidab 04 January 2013, 21:44

Who has helped them of the people? The little help they have recieved comes from international help agencies. Dont forget all the syrians that have been killed or attacked in lebanon simply for being syrian. The lebanese sunnis have not been diffirent than shias or maronites when it comes to racism against syrians. If i got a dollar every time a lebanese sunni spoke ill of syrians (not just bashar, but the syrian people as a whole) then i would be rich. I have heard lots of racist comments about syrians by lebanese sunnis who regularly call them nawar so please dont sit here and insult peoples intelligence.

Shame on our leaders, political or religious. The refugees are human beings not merchandise we can dispose of.

Missing mohammad_ca 05 January 2013, 14:35

now that nasrocrap has come out against closing the borders to try to win lost sympathy, his sheep are coming out in "support" of the refugees...

As if Lebanon does not already have filthy Sunni crazies among the natives, the Palestinians and now the Syrians. Get the Pif Paf and DDT ASAP.

The Syrians and Lebanese have the same essential roots and history, and even if they didn't it is common human decency to help those who escape persecution. Agree with Sheikh Qabbani 100%.

Missing peace 05 January 2013, 14:41

"lebanon can take care of maybe 10% of these refugees "

how do you know? because otv said so?

Missing mansour 05 January 2013, 10:57

Lebanon should NOT be helping these people period....lebanon should expel them all to Turkey or other Arab states, since they are pushing the war in Syria.
besides Lebanon should never forget what the syrians did to our people whether you support Syria or Not they killed many for there own personal gain.
Long Live The Syrian Civil War!

Missing mohammad_ca 05 January 2013, 14:37

Syria should have expelled you to Iran when Lebanon was being bombed in 2006

Missing mohammad_ca 06 January 2013, 02:19

didn't expect any less filth from hizbocrap supporters, way to stay on topic and respond with something substantial.

Missing mohammad_ca 05 January 2013, 14:40

I'm loving your reasoning about logistics...in another threat you said we should "ship them to India"...no one is going to be shipped anywhere, these people need humanitarian aid and they will get it if not from the hizbocrap Lebanon the Lebanese citizens will continue to help them and welcome them whether you like it or not.

Missing peace 05 January 2013, 14:43

you were happy when shias were welcomed in syria in 2006... now you deny syrians to be welcomed in lebanon? your friend iranman is ready to welcome them!
