Speaker Nabih Berri stressed on Wednesday the need to hold the parliamentary elections on time.

His visitors quoted him as saying he is “monitoring the meetings of the electoral subcommittee and hopes that the efforts would lead to an agreement on a new law that would ensure that the elections are held as scheduled.”

The speaker made his remarks during his weekly meeting with lawmakers at his Ain el-Tineh residence.

He renewed his position that he supports any electoral draft law that enjoys the consensus of the Christian political powers.

“The best law is the one that enjoys the agreement of the Lebanese people,” stressed Berri.

To that end, he stated that he will continue his efforts in order to reach such a law.

The electoral subcommittee resumed its meetings last week in order to study various draft laws.

Its next session is set for Monday.

Until that date, the various political powers have been tasked with studying a draft law proposal based on the winner-takes-all and proportional representation systems.

Our politicians are so efficient and professional when it comes to make laws to get them elected. They talk together, they do meetings, they compromise, they work.
But when it comes to public service, the service of the citizen, they are nowhere to be found.
