Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi stated on Monday that he does not oppose amending the Taif Accord “as experience has revealed several of its flaws.”

He said after holding talks with Change and Reform bloc MP Nematallah Abi Nasr: “We don’t mind change and if we needed a new agreement, then why not.”

The patriarch also called for devising a new electoral law, stressing that the law should not be modified to accommodate political leaderships.

The president should be granted more privileges, al-Rahi added.

With all due respect to his Beatitude, this is a bad idea to float during this time of great turbulence in the region and a power void in Lebanon but for the relentless pursuit by Hezbollah to take over the State institutions.

I can guarantee, whatever faults in the Taif that Rai sees, are not the same ones that Hezbollah sees and an opening of the Taif file will add even more instability and can produce results wildly off the mark from where the Patriarch would like the changes to land.

Best to leave Taif as is and wait for a government to be in place for a number of years, giving stability before suggesting changes.

Al Rahi lacks advisers who are deep thinkers, strategists and wise men of the caliber of ABOU STEIF O. GHALAYINI and Beiruti. Otherwise, Al Rahi will fail, fumble, fail.and fall. As his predecessor Sfeir used to say, wa kad ou3zira man anzara

It's not an issue with Hizballah agreeing with it, it's if King Hariri approves it as the Sunnis have all the governmental powers now and his father King Hariri Sr. paid millions during the Taif to get the power shifted from the Maronites to the Sunnis.

Finally, a patriarch who has the interest of the Christians in mind and who dares to question the hegemony of Saudi Arabia over Lebanon through the Taef accord.
