Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam reiterated on Monday his keenness to achieve national interests in his mission to form a new government.

He said after holding talks with Speaker Nabih Berri: “I hope that the new cabinet pleases all political powers.”

“I am not hasty in my efforts, but I do not want to take too long in forming a new government,” he told reporters at Ain el-Tineh.

“We are in need of a new government because a caretaker one will only weaken Lebanon,” stressed Salam.

He added that Lebanon is passing through a difficult period that requires a new government, hoping that lawmakers would reach an agreement over a new parliamentary electoral law during Wednesday's parliament session.

The premier-designate reiterated his goal to form a cabinet that will oversee the elections, which are set for June 16.

Media reports said Monday that he was seeking the establishment of a de facto cabinet, which would allegedly prompt the Hizbullah-led March 8 camp to take street action in protest.

The alliance has asked for veto power in the new government and sought to name its own ministers despite the rejection of Salam.

Berri meanwhile told As Safir newspaper Monday the announcement of a de facto cabinet ahead of Wednesday's parliamentary session will have negative repercussions on it and end the possibility of reaching consensus over a new electoral law.

Veto for ALL or for NONE. Okay FT.... as a Lebanese i will not allow my government to be crippled by a retarded Veto bully. So I guess veto for NONE is better. What?!!! your M8 thugs can't stomach a normal civilized debate in the cabinet. So if they don't get their veto they go out on the streets and burn tyres like little cry babies till they get what they want ... Mmmm reminds me of the way the governments of m14 and prior were paralyzed...

The wisest comments on these forums are from those who reject both sides. There are rotten apples in any organisation and to blindly follow one is just pure ignorance. Why can't you guys agree on some things instead of attacking each other with silly insults. We are in the middle of a geo-political chess game and we are merely pawns, so for the love of God, let's unite. Iranians are good people, they've been screwed by sanctions ever since they overthrew a corrupt Shah.... and have been facing hostility from the US ever since, yet this shouldn't be our problem and nor should we get involved in their politics as they should not get involved in ours. Likewise, Saudi Arabia has pumped a lot of money into Lebanon and have made lives easier for many Lebanese, but this should not entitle them or their US allies to get involved in our politics. We are a very cultured and resourceful people so lets please live with some dignity together for once.
