Berri Worried about 'Chaos' in Northern Lebanon

Speaker Nabih Berri expressed on Wednesday his concern over the security situation in northern Lebanon in light of the eruption of clashes between the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

He also voiced his concern over the security situation in other regions in Lebanon, his visitors quoted him as saying during his weekly meeting with lawmakers held at his Ain el-Tineh residence.

The clashes in Tripoli broke out over the weekend.

They have taken place mainly between Bab al-Tabbaneh, which backs the Syrian revolt, and Jabal Mohsen, which supports the Syrian regime.

Twelve people were killed and at least 100 were wounded since the clashes erupted on Sunday.

Addressing discussions over the parliamentary electoral law, the lawmakers said that the speaker's contacts with various political powers are ongoing in order to resolve this issue.

“No new development has been made over this matter,” they remarked.

Berri is holding consultations with political foes away from media spotlight as a last attempt to reach common ground over a new electoral law before resorting to the extension of the parliament's mandate.

The political powers have so far failed to agree on a new electoral law, which is threatening to postpone the elections that are set for June 16.

Well take the hand cuffs off the Army, let them go in and clean up the Salafists before it is too late ...

There will be an increasing influx of Salafist Jihadi as the Syria situation unfolds against them. The time is now to insure stability.

The 47 mortar shells that hit Tripoli during the span of one hour during the night were fired from Jabal Muhsin and the assad thugs and not from the salafists. But yes - it is time for the army to move in and disarm tripoli and then the rest of militias in lebanon and that include the Hizb. Do not be under any illusion that the army can impose a one-sided disarmament.

"The 47 mortar shells that hit Tripoli during the span of one hour during the night were fired from Jabal Muhsin and the assad thugs and not from the salafists."

Got a link? What i found was that 47 mortar shells were fired but no confirmation by whom.

I did find this however:

"Around 4:30 a.m., a 300-strong force of Salafist fighters from the mainly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood,"

Mc - the salafists in tripoli do not have mortars. The assad thugs fired mortar shells on tripoli during the night and this is not the first time they did so. When a salafist force tried to move from bab al tebbaneh against jabal mushsin in reaction to the shelling, they were stopped by the army and a firefight ensued between the two. Now the army is right to stop the salafists from entering jabal muhsin as many people would likely have died. However, the shelling of tripoli by the assad thugs cannot continue. Otherwise with or without the army, this will spiral out of control. As I have said, the army has to impose disarmament on all sides and that include the Hizb. Do we want a state or not?

"including mortars and RPGs ... Supplied by Saad ..."

mc - look at all the videos and reports that came out and see what is type of weapons. Show me one mortar or rocket launchers in Bab Al-tebbaneh!

Vader - many thugs in amal do not follow Berri. Many take their orders from the Hizb. In many respect, Berri is as much a hostage to the Hizb as the rest of us.

instead of worrying, get this parliament to meet and do something. And stop allowing weapons to reach the thugs of jabal mohsen and beb el tebbaneh.

well aoun asked for the disarmement of ALL armed groups in lebanon... but now? LOL if you allow ONE group to have arms then you should not complain if others do so... that is the logic hezbollah has dragged lebanon into with the blessing of aoun....

If the hizballah and the fpm are true to why the hizballah needs their arms (protect Lebanon) then they should join the army and enter all camps in Lebanon occupied by Palestinians and the dirt we find in tripoli and strip them of all their weapons by forced and send them back to the countries in which they belong. Lebanon needs a cleansing within before starting to cleanse other countries.
