Report: Palestinian Factions Vow Neutrality after Asir Asks for Military Aid

Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir reportedly contacted Palestinian factions in the Ain el-Hilweh refugee camp asking for a military aid.

According to al-Akhbar newspaper published on Wednesday, Asir asked the Palestinian groups to launch rockets from Ain el-Hilweh towards Haret Sidon.

However, the Palestinian leadership in the refugee camp contacted Asir and other sides demanding them to "neutralize" Ain el-Hilweh.

The report said that an urgent meeting was held in the refugee camp after clashes erupted between Asir and the Hizbullah-affiliated Resistance Brigades in the southern port city of Sidon.

The representative of Hamas movement, according to al-Akhbar, stressed during the meeting that the priority is to prevent the security chaos from spilling over into the other Palestinian camps in Lebanon.

Clashes erupted on Tuesday afternoon between supporters of Asir, the imam of Sidon's Bilal bin Rabah Mosque, and the Resistance Brigades in the Sidon neighborhood of Abra, leaving at least one person dead and four others wounded.

The Lebanese army deployed in Sidon as the violence comes amid soaring sectarian tensions in Lebanon that have escalated because of the raging war in neighboring Syria.

The army said several people were wounded by the gunfire.

Asir, who espouses an austere form of Sunni Islam, is known for his opposition to Hizbullah.

He has alleged several times that the group uses several apartments in Abra to stockpile weapons and house fighters.

According to the army, the violence broke out after a car accident in the southern city, when "armed men took to the streets in Abra and opened fire... and wounded several people."

Sectarian tensions pitting Sunnis against Shiites have soared in fragile Lebanon as the spillover from Syria's war has escalated.

Though Lebanon has officially adopted a position of neutrality in Syria's war, Hizbullah and its allies back the Damascus regime of President Bashar Assad.

"Though Lebanon has officially adopted a position of neutrality in Syria's war, Hizbullah and its allies back the Damascus regime of President Bashar Assad."

Oh Please ... let's not stop there ... Future Party Members Saad Hariri and Oqab Saqr were sending supplies to Syrian rebels before the HA was even involved in Syria ...

Northern Lebanon was, and still is, a major conduit of men and weapons to the Syrian opposition and the KSA and Qatar were and are behind this and the destabilization of Lebanon as well.

if this is true(and I strongly doubt it) then the Palestinians have matured.
hope we, Lebanese, will mature one day and stop fighting other peoples' wars.

It seems that Assir was right after all about these apartments manned by Hizb thugs and full of weapons. Time for the state have a manopoly of arm.

"Asir, who espouses an austere form of Sunni Islam". What's happening with Naharnet? They're very articulate today ;-)

I send you my regards!

that is only because hezbis and his allies are provoking people in these areas... nothing to do with M14. as usual your stupid propaganda is void and empty...
M8 has adopted the same tactics as syrians: provoke people lead them to exaperation then cry out foul when people are fed up and react, and like you cry like offensed virgins you are...

why would M14 stir trouble in the areas where they have the majority? LOL!
poor FT always trying to spread your FPM hatred...

Missing peace 19 June 2013, 11:54

HA and Amal support the Asaad regime and the Ayatollah Mullahs on religious gorund. THeir loyalty to Shiism exceeds their loyalty to Lebanon.
Al-Asir is one to support the Palestinians over the army also on religious ground. His loyalty to extreme Sunnis far exceeds his loyalty to Lebanon. Any wonder Lebanon is in such a mess.
If HA disarmed and the Palestinians camps disarmed then their would no one capable of threatening anyone else as the army becomes the strongest element then. This too shall pass as whistling past the graves.

I suppose you are a cross and human worshipper, so that is why you use filthy words about others beliefs. To everyone on this forum, plz go and educate yourself about the history of the middle East. For more than 1400 years the middle East and beyond was ruled by the just and fair islamic law under the islamic state, with the exception of about 100 years under the uncivilised and barbaric cross worshippers. Today history repeats itself, with the exception that Palestine is under the jews. But signs are appearing that the victory is near, and then the entire region will return to its normal state, which is under the just and fair islamic law under the islamic state. Or do you deny 1400 years of ruling?
