Report: Israel Launched Strikes near Key Syria Port

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

A series of explosions on July 5 near the key Syrian port city of Latakia were the result of Israeli air strikes, CNN reported, citing three U.S. officials.

In the report late Friday, the network said the strikes were aimed at Russian-made Yakhont missiles that Israel viewed as a threat to its naval forces in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Israeli military declined to comment on the report.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based rights group opposed to President Bashar Assad's regime, originally reported the blasts, saying they struck ammunition depots.

The center said there were reports of deaths and injuries but could not provide further details.

Israel has launched a number of air strikes inside Syria since the start of the two-year uprising against Assad, saying they are aimed at preventing sophisticated weapons from being transferred to militant groups.

Israel is especially concerned about Syrian weapons falling into the hands of Hizbullah, a close Assad ally that battled the Jewish state to a bloody stalemate in the summer of 2006.

I do not see any benefit for Israel from that raid. If such attacks had actually occurred then I believe that the US had carried them.

There goes another billion of Iran-sponsored dollars up in the air. I wonder how long the ordinary Iranians will accept such use of their oil wealth?

Missing un520 13 July 2013, 18:47

Assad said after the last attack that it "created opportunities". I wonder if he has taken a closer look at the "opportunities" or even seized them? Fact is that the Syrian civil war has created a massive opportunity for Israel to cut off the potential supply of upgraded weaponary to Hezbollah. Assads catch-22 is that if he tries to retaliate the answer will be even more ferocious, and he know it..

Oh well.... I wouldn't be surprised if Russia itself told Israel where they were stored. What matters to Putin is the income...

Russian citizens require no passports of visa to go to Israel and vice versa... They have close ties.

Missing phillipo 13 July 2013, 21:49

Benzona - Wrong again - Russians, and EVERY other countrys' citizens need passports to enter Israel.

so, how long do we wait for syria's response this time?

never mind, we are still waiting for their responses from 2007....

Missing VINCENT 13 July 2013, 21:00

CNN reports: "A series of explosions near Latakia were the result of Israeli air strikes, but the Israeli military declined to comment on the report." So, why jump into conclusions? Lets ask the Iranian leadership if Israel indeed did it.

Thumb general_puppet 13 July 2013, 21:11

The Assad regime will not even acknowledge the strike, much less respond to it. Assad has a new policy on Israeli strikes in Syria it is called "don't ask, don't tell" this way it will be less embarrassing to the Glorious Axis.

LOL, indeed it is hypocrisy at its paroxysm.

Missing VINCENT 14 July 2013, 00:56

What happens in Syria, stays in Syria. Wait a minute, that's a pretty good idea.

Default-user-icon Ploni (Guest) 13 July 2013, 21:25

Lol, if any country actually tries to 'destroy' Israel and Israel actually gets to the point of being destroyed, the numerous nuclear bombs thhat Israel is holding will be deployed and there will be no Mecca, no Medina, no Alexandria, no Cairo, no Damascus, no Baghdad, no Amman, no Irbid, no etc etc etc... So you keep damning about the glorious Arab armies that will destroy the Jewish state. It will never happen so you can continue to dream, or you can decide to live in peace and cooperation with your neighbors and work together to make a nice region for all the people Jews, Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians, etc will get to have a better lifestyle and live in prosperity. Your choice.

Missing VINCENT 14 July 2013, 00:54

I like they way you are thinking, but as to Lebanon, empty the Palestinian camps and their weapon out of Lebanon, and then we'll talk about "being" able to live in peace. We'll deal with the rest.

Missing beirutbastard00 14 July 2013, 00:55

I don't think u understand how war works.

And what Arab armies lol??? ... Anyway, it's not ww2 anymore. No more giant armies, slowly closing in on the capital city, and once the capital falls, war is over...

Now a days, 100 men, in a city, can hold out against an army for months!... Don't forget, Israel's biggest threat is HA... Israelis are cowards. They will not be pushed into the sea, for they will willingly jump in!

Anyway, none of this matters. Sooner or later the world will wake up, and the same thing will happen like South Africa.

AND I would just like to add, Saudi offered Israel full relations with all countries... We're still waiting for the reply.

Missing beirutbastard00 14 July 2013, 01:00

Vincent how about we empty the camps by sending the Palestinians back to their homes?

Any Jews reading this plzzzzzz understand!!... We are willing to part with half of Palestine, are u willing to part with half of Israel??!! The ball is in your court, your are the aggressor, the occupier, and the demolisher!

Missing VINCENT 14 July 2013, 09:33

Beirutbastard, Palestinians going back to their homes would be ideal, but there is a big BUT. If Lebanon is the biggest barking dog in the Middle East, I would take on that job myself, make it my mission and give it all I have. But we are not, and Lebanon has suffered enough. If we don't change the existing state of affairs, Lebanon will no longer exist as we knew it. So, in my opinion, we can do our best to help the helpless, but at the end of they day we have to be ultimately selfish for our own peace of mind and survival, and put the burden of sending the Palestinians back to their homes on the oil rich Arab countries with who have the ears of the super powers.

Interesting story.
CNN citing 3 US Officials - Attacks were the result of Israeli air strikes ,
(British) Sunday Times Intelligence sources in the Middle East claim the recent attack on an arms depot in the Syrian port city of Latakia, which was attributed to the Israeli Air Force, was actually carried out by an Israeli Dolphin class submarine which fired a cruise missile from the sea,
According to the British newspaper, the target was a consignment of 50 Russian-made Yakhont P-800 anti-ship missiles delivered to President Bashar Assad's armed forces this year.
So who do you believe or not ?

Missing phillipo 14 July 2013, 12:15

Someone, i.e. the Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister, should read the report in todays British Sunday Times.

Missing un520 14 July 2013, 14:10

Theres no reason to doubt this. Israel has made repeatedly strikes already against the most sophisticated weaponary that Assad currently has, and they will most probably continue to do so if needed. This is a war that Assad is bound to loose, but I guess he will find an outlet for his fury against his own citizens as usual.
