A parliamentary session dedicated to tackling a number of draft-laws was postponed on Tuesday over a lack of quorum.

MTV reported that the session was automatically postponed after Speaker Nabih Berri did not even attend the meeting.

This is the fourth postponement of the session and the fifth session will be held on September 23 with the same agenda.

The pan-Arab daily al-Hayat had reported on Monday that the speaker was likely to postpone the two-day session in order to avoid further tensions in Lebanon in light of the ongoing political disputes and security unrest.

The session was postponed for a third time on July 29 over a lack of quorum.

Several parliamentary blocks boycotted the parliamentary session over a dispute with the speaker over its agenda, which included 45 articles.

Berri insists on keeping the 45 draft-laws on the agenda intact and had previously vowed to continue to call on MPs to a General Assembly meeting until the agenda is discussed.

Caretaker Premier Najib Miqati argues that there is no balance between the powers of the legislative and executive branches amid a resigned government.

Miqati and the March 14 alliance say that the agenda's articles should be limited to one draft-law, which is extending Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji's mandate.

Qahwaji's term ends in September when he turns 60.

MPs should be paid on basis of attendance, you'd see much less of these if it was the case.

Aoun: Why should we go to parliament amid this approach regarding administrative appointments? To strike deals?

Is it true that a member of parliament gets paid for life regardless whether he gets reelected or not??

Yep. Some even get body guards for life/on the house.

Lebanon won't transcend these harsh conditions unless the constitution is amended and revise, which won't happen anytime soon.

Lebanon's political and legal structure is akin to something being held together with some duck tape and some sticks in hopes of it staying together long enough until some undefined time in the future when the colonials perhaps had something in mind. It has staying together longer than any would have imagined, but the constitution underlying the state and everything else requires much needed repairs.

I am visiting Lebanon now. I just mentioned to a friend that I pray no explosions will occur while visiting. He replied and I quote" don't pray just get yourself an armored car".
oh well

A new political system is needed it's unfair for one sect that represents 40% of the Lebanese population is represented at less than 25% with no executive powers and a religious group with all it's sects and denominations representing less than 35% of the Lebanese population holds 50% of the powers including the top office.

Don't worry, the heading will soon read not "Postponed for Fourth Time" but "Postponed for the fourteenth - or fortieth - time". Mr. Berri has no intention whatsoever of convening the Parliament, and the quicker you all wake up and understand that, the better. 17 months, followed by another 17 months will pass very quickly.
