Russia 'Absolutely' Unconvinced by Syria Chemical Attack Claims

Russia is totally unconvinced by evidence presented by the United States and its allies of an alleged chemical attack outside Damascus that the West says was perpetrated by the Syrian regime, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.

Moscow vehemently opposes U.S.-led plans for military action against the regime of Bashar Assad in response to the alleged attack, even though the timetable has now been put back by President Barack Obama's decision to put it to Congress.

"What we were shown before and most recently by our American partners as well as the British and the French absolutely does not convince us," Lavrov said at a university lecture in Moscow.

He added there were "many doubts" about images of the alleged attack posted on the Internet. President Vladimir Putin said over the weekend it would have been "utter nonsense" for the regime to launch such an attack when it has the military ascendancy.

Lavrov said Russia had been shown some evidence by the West but expressed skepticism over its validity, saying "there was nothing concrete, without geographic coordinates or names."

He accused the West of concealing comments by "many experts" who have expressed "serious doubts" about the validity of the video footage of the attack posted on the Internet.

"If we are going to state that these are pictures of the use of chemical arms and of the effects on the victims then there is a mass of disparities and absurdities," Lavrov said.

"There are very many doubts," he said. "There are no facts, just talk that 'we probably know this'," he added.

"And when you ask for more detailed evidence, they say that it is all secret and they cannot show you. Thus, there are no such facts for the purposes of international cooperation," he added.

The dispute between the West and Russia over Syria is expected to be at the center of the G20 summit which is to be hosted by Putin later this week in Saint Petersburg.

No amount of proof will ever be "convincing" for messers Lavrov and Putin for if they were to be convinced then they would be exposed as supporters of an illegitimate and criminal regime.

@lebnanfirst please direct me to a legitimate source where it details proof beyond doubt that President Assad is responsible for the alleged use of chem weapons? You say that the Syrian government is illegitimate yet a majority of the Syrian people in Syria and abroad supports President Assad.. Please tell where or who have we seen on the media calling for the ouster of President Assad other than the extremist Muslims that a majority of are not even Syrian.

please enlighten me as to why, if as you say Assad has the popular support of the people inside and outside of Syria, did he NEVER have free fair elections and always came out with 99% of the vote through rigged and b.s. elections???

Avoiding a question by presenting a question isn't an answer. Syrians lived in safety, prosperity and were always protected if they belonged to a minority religious sect and that is the exact reason they supported and elected him and to this day fight for him. My friend, ask yourself why are people not only from his Alawite sect but Sunni, Christians and Druze fighting for him?? When you answer this question honestly I would be more than happy to debate with you further.

with all due respect, to say that i answered a question with a question is not applicable to this. You stated that most Syrians are WITH al-assad.. and i asked you that if this is the case why would he fake elections and give himself a 99% vote in every election he or his dad ever ran in??
and in regards to Syrians living in prosperity, that is laughable at best. Syria has always had one of the highest unemployment rates and a majority of it's citizens lived and still live in poverty.
i am not denying that minorities lived in peace, however, there are moderates in the opposition who will still ensure they live in peace.
why dont you ask why there are some christians and even alawites in the opposition? and a vast majority of the kurds are against him as well.
