Hizbullah: Bellemare's Silence on Many Issues Shows Extent of STL's Credibility Corrosion

Hizbullah has hit back at Special Tribunal for Lebanon Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare, noting that “he did not tackle any of the presented evidence, as he was not able to refute any of the solid facts demonstrated by Hizbullah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.”

In a statement it issued Tuesday afternoon, the party put forward a “quick summary of Bellemare’s failures in clarifying the tribunal’s stance” on the issue of the so-called “false witnesses” and the file of witness Mohammed Zuheir Siddiq.

Hizbullah accused Bellemare of “personally” working on settling Siddiq’s alleged case with the INTERPOL.

It noted that Bellemare “had rejected to probe the possibility of Israel’s involvement in the assassination crime” and “disregarded the issue of the imprisonment of the Four Generals.”

The fact that Bellemare “has not denied the issue of the computers transferred to occupied Palestine (Israel) raises serious questions,” Hizbullah added.

The party accused the U.N. prosecutor of “overlooking the issue of the (Israeli) spies who had fled, and who were present at the crime’s scene, such as Ghassan al-Jidd.”

Bellemare also “failed to respond to the issue of CIA agent Robert Baer and his roles in the investigation and in the tribunal” as well as the issue of “other investigators affiliated with intelligence agencies that show open hostility to the Resistance.”

“Bellemare’s silence concerning these issues demonstrates how much the tribunal’s credibility has corroded,” Hizbullah said in its statement.

Bellemare on Monday defended the “professionalism, impartiality and expertise” of the staff of his office, saying he had “full confidence in their strong commitment to finding the truth.”

“The Prosecutor welcomes Mr. Nasrallah’s offer to provide the file that he stated he has on some elements of the investigation and requests the video material that was shown on television during his televised statement, as well as any other information and documents that would assist the Tribunal in its ongoing pursuit of justice,” Bellemare added.

He stressed that “the investigation is carried out according to the highest standards of international justice and its results are based solely on facts and credible evidence.”

Nasrallah on Saturday ruled out the arrest of four members of his party indicted by the STL for the 2005 assassination of former premier Rafik Hariri.

In his first reaction to the charges by the STL, Nasrallah also rejected "each and every void accusation" made by the Netherlands-based court, which he said was heading for a trial in absentia.

Nasrallah accused top investigators at the tribunal, including the first U.N. chief investigator, Detlev Mehlis, and his deputy, Gerhard Lehmann, of corruption.

In elaborately edited segments, Al-Manar television aired footage which Nasrallah said showed former Lehmann receiving a wad of cash in exchange for documents in the Hariri case.

Al-Manar also aired a document which Nasrallah said proved investigators had transferred IT equipment across Lebanon's southern border into Israel when it moved its staff to the Netherlands in 2009.

"Do you expect this tribunal to be fair with resistance fighters who fought against Israel?" he said. "This tribunal, since the beginning, was formed for a clear political target."

Hilarious.

The STL welcomed any evidence that Nasrallah wants to bring, but because they didn't respond to charges via a trial by press, like a drooling idiot (like Nasrallah) Hizbollah claims they proved their case. Ha Ha Ha.

Are their ANY educated Shia's out there? ANY???

Thumb bashir 05 July 2011, 20:17

the STL welcomes any Hezbollah 'evidence'.
the STL tries cases in court, not the press.
no one with an education or the ability to reason believes Hezbollah's perspective on the STL.

You can not out run the long arm of the law. The killers of Hariiri WILL pay.

And what did Bellemare say?:

“The Prosecutor welcomes Mr. Nasrallah’s offer to provide the file that he stated he has on some elements of the investigation and requests the video material that was shown on television during his televised statement, as well as any other information and documents that would assist the Tribunal in its ongoing pursuit of justice,”

And has Nasrallah left the bunker where he cowers in a burka to submit this evidence to the STL??? I think not.

Just hand over the 4 accused and have a strong defense team assigned to the case.. If they are innocent, it will be proven for every one to see!

Well said Bashir. Evidence in a trial has no room in the press and should be presented in court by the parties' attorneys.

Hezbollah's so-called evidence is thinner than the paper it's written on. And Bellemare is cutting the grass under Nasrallah's feet by saying he will welcome it.

The game is clear, you have International Law on one side, and a thuggish militia on the other...

I does not matter what HZB thinks or not think about the STL. You have to show up in court and defend yourself. Do you think adopting this method is going to net them anything. This is not the stone age. it is July 2011. Wake up and smell the hommus Nisrallah! Look up the process how people defend themselves in court. You are not above the law, you are only an outlaw.

Thumb Marc 05 July 2011, 21:06

I am thinking that it may be a great opportunity for Hizballah to partake in the court, if they believe that they are innocent they get world centre stage (as the proceedings will be live) to put their case forward for every one to see. That is the way I see it if I was wrongly accused! running away from the court will give the wrong impressions . . . . Just saying!!

You know, maybe Bellamere and the STL did not follow up on the propaganda films produced as "evidence" during Nasrallah's announcement of the Policy Statement for the Mikati Government because it was either patenly forged or false, or had already been looked into during the 6 year long pre-indictment investigation. Silence when the accused asked the prosecutor to chase down a red herring is not proof of anything, much less "corruption".

And if your boys are not guilty Nasrallah, then why secret them off to Iran and the IRGC to keep and hide them from the law. It is obstruction of justice to assist a fugitive from the law. Just another crime to add to the pile of crimes on your head. For Nasrallah to challenge the credibility of the STL would be funny if for the fact that the legitmacy of the Republic of Lebanon hangs in the balance.

After seeing many criminal proscutions, the conduct of Nasrallah displays the classic response of one who has been caught is guilty.

Whatever HA says at this point is like farting in the wind. They will be tried in absentia and if found guilty, convicted. No matter what they do now, the culprits will be caught and brought to justice, this might be 10 years from now, unless unless they are disposed off the HA way.

Bellemare “has not denied the issue of the computers transferred to occupied Palestine (Israel) raises serious questions,” Hizbullah added.
You mean the issue of what appears to be a paper presented on al-Manar TV, and containing what is claimed to be records detailing the transfer of STL computer to Israel.
Israel having some of the best computer experts worldwide, I can see that they might want to send confiscated computers there for forensic analysis. But I'm sure there are other places they can send it to in Europe or US - and if they really did that I'd think they would not get caught like this (in this stupid way) with such a paper. It just seems to convenient (for the H.A.) to be true.

poor bellemare, he talks he discredits the stl, he is silent , he discredits the stl... he should then sing no?

one who should be silent is the "victory of god" man, he ll bring credit to his party...

Actually I feel sorry for all those followers of the Shiite militia. They are scared of Israel and yet the drink Coca Cola, eat McDonalds, wear Levis and write on computers using processors made by Intel in Israel. Just to name a few. Where’s the logic?
