U.S. Arms Experts, Brahimi to Join Kerry-Lavrov Talks in Geneva

A team of U.S. arms experts will accompany Secretary of State John Kerry to Geneva to meet with Russian counterparts for high-stakes talks on Syria's chemical weapons, a U.S. official said Wednesday.

Kerry is set to meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov first on Thursday, but officials said the talks could stretch into Saturday.

Russia said Wednesday it had given the U.S. its plan to put Syria's chemical weapons under international control amid hopes of a diplomatic solution to the crisis triggered by an alleged gas attack near Damascus last month.

The move came a day after threatened U.S.-led strikes against President Bashar Assad's regime were put on hold in response to Russia's offer to oversee Syriagiving up its arsenal.

Kerry and Lavrov are expected to closely examine the Russian proposal, but State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said so far Moscow had "put forward ideas" rather than a "lengthy package," adding there were still "components that need to be worked out."

Kerry will also meet with the U.N.-Arab League special envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, during his visit to Geneva, Psaki said.

"The secretary will be heading to Geneva later this evening to meet not only to meet with Foreign Minister Lavrov, but we will also be bringing a team of experts to meet with their team of experts," she told reporters.

"Our goal here is to hear from the Russians about the modalities of their ideas that they have put forward and to assess whether they meet our requirements" for the disposal of Syria's chemical weapons, she said.

Dude,

I just read this in lorient le jour. The Russian-American deal was mentioned in the Haaretz paper on September 1st.

Where did you get your source(s)?

Gracias sr.

No need for insults (and you wonder why Naharnet keeps on deleting your account!)
when you say that the US is scared of what you call "the resistance axis"...the only answer is "Resistance shmesistance".
Israel already bombed Syria 3 times this year, it occupies the Golan Heights, Iran is under heavy sanctions led by the US, its nuclear scientists were murdered, its nuclear station computers hacked, its missile depots blown up and what does the Resistance Axe do? kill Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian driver and manage to get the "resistance shmesistance" on the European terror list...

The problem I have with the Syrian regime, Hezbollah and Iran is the following:
They are defined by the anti-west stand. The Assad regime does it to remain in power, line up their pockets and subjugate Syrians and Lebanese to their will.
The Ayatollahs and their regime do it for the same reason in Iran.
And as for Hezbollah I don't want to talk about them because they are Lebanese and I decided to stop criticizing my Lebanese compatriots (we all have been exploited by regional and international powers and paid and are still paying a very heavy price.)
I care and respect governments that improve the lives of their citizens. That work for their citizens. And unfortunately for the Syrians and Iranians, their governments led them from disaster to disaster, squandering their wealth and lives (the way Gaddafi and Saddam did to their citizens whom they treated like serfs).

So yes the axis you blindly follow has only brought poverty, death and slavery. Again I leave Hezbollah out of this observation.

Thumb Machia 11 September 2013, 23:43

No better exploit your people, kill them, gaz them, make them poor while you and your relatives fill your pockets with billions of usd and pretend to fight Israel and the US...by using poor Lebanese people to fight your game in Lebanon.

Thumb Machia 11 September 2013, 23:46

The Assad and Ayatollah regimes are nothing but cowards, bloody tyrants and thieves.

Thumb Machia 11 September 2013, 23:56

Hahaha...I wish we were all exploited like the US exploits its citizens...good one...hahahaha

Again insults...Naharnet Stop Deleting His Account ;-)

Exploitation ? By whom ? Israel on the other hand has taught us ways to redefine terrorism ..
Menachem Begin was the First to perform terrorist activities by blowing up buses full of British soldiers & innocent people .
Israel has redefined "invade & occupy " land that does not belong to it
Israel has redefined Assassinations , Murder, Kidnapping , torture, imprisonment without trails !
As a matter of fact they built the LONGEST Prison Wall in history imprisoning an entire " Race" of population starving families at will !
Israel redefined RACISM , GENOCIDE , RFEUGEES, DISPLACEMENT
Israel redefined the art of " Death Squads " that are trained to kill in foreign lands
Israel redefined the use of WMD such as the use of Cluster Bombs , Phosphorious , Depleted Uranium Missiles !
Israel in short has been the instigator & at the moment we are experiencing the "by-product "of Israel's actions towards the Region !
Signed Wolf ..

No one stopped the U.S. Good thing Obama is the U.S. president. Had it been anyone else, WWIII would have already started

Read it again ! M11
What we have are "by-products" due to the Israel / Zionist " Actions" !
Ever since the creation of the man made state within a state called Israel , there has been severe problems as I have mentioned in my above post .
Read it again ! If you can't understand it then I can't do much for you. !!!!!!
