Armenia arrested 10 prominent opposition figures on Thursday for their role in violent unrest that erupted after the government signed a peace deal with Azerbaijan that ceded swathes of territory.

More than 2,000 demonstrators Wednesday protested in the Armenian capital as anger mounted over Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's decision to cede swathes of disputed territory to Azerbaijan under a controversial peace deal.

Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on a deal with Russia to end weeks of fierce clashes over Nagorno-Karabakh on Tuesday, after a string of Azerbaijani victories in its fight to retake the disputed region.

Three civilians were killed as Azerbaijani forces shelled the main city of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region on Friday, Armenia said, following weeks of fighting over the mountainous province.

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan on Friday were in Geneva for talks with international mediators in a new effort to negotiate a ceasefire over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region after weeks of fighting.

A third attempt at halting weeks of fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh collapsed quickly on Monday with Armenia and Azerbaijan trading accusations of violating the US-brokered ceasefire within minutes.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday urged an end to  fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh as he met his counterparts from Azerbaijan and Armenia but there were no signs of progress.

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan were in Moscow on Wednesday for meetings with Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov as world powers seek to halt fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The ministers were visiting the Russian capital, their respective ministries said as the pair are due to meet with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday. 

A new ceasefire agreed between Armenia and Azerbaijan to halt fighting over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh was again failing to hold on Monday as both sides accused each other of fresh attacks.

The truce, backed by international mediators to put a stop to three weeks of fighting that has left hundreds dead, was supposed to have come into force at midnight Sunday but both sides immediately accused each other of violating the deal.

A missile strike levelled a row of homes in Azerbaijan's second city of Ganja on Saturday, killing 12 and injuring more than 40 people in their sleep in a sharp escalation of the conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The early hours attack, which saw a second missile strike another part of Ganja and a third reach the nearby strategic city of Mingecevir, came hours after Azerbaijani forces shelled the ethnic Armenian separatist region's capital Stepanakert.
