Yemen's Would-be Model, Aden Plagued by Bombs, Instability

On a rocky hill overlooking the Arabian Sea in the city of Aden sits the palace of Yemen's internationally recognized president. It's one of the few safe places in the country for him and his government, protected by troops at the gates, artillery and truck-mounted machine guns in the surrounding mountains and ships at sea.

The rest of the southern city remains unstable. Only a 10 minute drive from the palace, a suicide bomber struck days ago at the Sawlaban military base, killing 52 soldiers. It was the fourth time militants have hit the base in the past six months. The last strike was only about a week earlier. All told, the attacks have killed more than 180 people.

An Afghan official says gunmen on a motorbike opened fire at the house of a former Taliban leader in the capital, killing at least one person.

Turkish Police Briefly Detain Pro-Kurdish Party Lawmaker

Turkish police on Friday briefly detained a deputy speaker of parliament, forcibly taking her to a court to testify in an on-going case where she is accused of making propaganda in support of outlawed Kurdish rebels.

Pervin Buldan, a senior legislator from the Turkey's pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party, or HDP, later told reporters waiting outside the courthouse that she was released after telling court officials that she would not testify in the "politically-motivated" case.

Plants Closed, Cars Stopped as China Faces Smog 'Red Alert'

Chinese cities are limiting the number of cars on roads and have temporarily shut down factories to cut down pollution during a national "red alert" for smog.

State media reported Monday that more than 700 companies stopped production in Beijing, and that traffic police were restricting drivers by monitoring their license plate numbers. Dozens of cities closed schools and took other emergency measures after a "red alert" was issued from Friday night to Wednesday for much of northern China.

350,000 Migrants Arrived in EU this Year So Far

The head of the European Union border control agency says that about 350,000 migrants have arrived in the EU so far this year.

Fabrice Leggeri, executive director of the Frontex border agency, was quoted Saturday by German daily Ruhr-Nachrichten as saying about 180,000 people arrived via Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean, while 170,000 reached the continent across the central Mediterranean route from Libya and Egypt. That's a sharp decline from 2015, when more than 1 million people arrived.
