Tight Security in Belgrade ahead of Gay Pride March

The Serbian capital Belgrade was under tight security Sunday ahead of the Gay Pride parade, the second in a row since the event was marred by violence in 2010.

Hundreds of riot police officers were deployed in the city center with several armored and water cannon vehicles parked at main crossings in the downtown area where roads have been closed to traffic since the early morning.

Croatian Serb Rebel in Belgrade on Release for Cancer Treatment

Karadzic 'Driving Force' of Bosnia's Ethnic Cleansing, U.N. Court Told

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic was the "driving force" behind ethnic cleansing during Bosnia's bloody civil war, including some of the worst atrocities since World War II, the Yugoslav war crimes court heard on Monday.

"The policy of ethnic cleansing has been fully exposed as has Dr. Karadzic as its driving force," U.N. prosecutor Alan Tieger said during closing arguments at the marathon five-year trial before the Hague-based court.

Two policemen were injured Monday as protesters stoned a EU vehicle in Serb-populated northern Kosovo in the first such incident since Belgrade and Pristina reached a deal on normalizing ties.

A European Union rule of law mission (EULEX) police patrol was stopped by protesters in the northern town Zvecan who soon began stoning the car.

U.N. Court Drops One Genocide Count against Karadzic

The Yugoslav war crimes court on Thursday dropped one genocide charge against Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, but a second charge relating to the 1995 massacre at Srebrenica remains.

The judge said there was not enough evidence to substantiate the definition of genocide in relation to killings by Bosnian Serb forces in towns and villages in 1992.

Polls Open in Serbian Presidential Election

Voters across Serbia headed to the polls Sunday to elect a new president in a run-off with the incumbent pro-European Boris Tadic set for a victory over nationalist challenger Tomislav Nikolic.

Surveys published just ahead of the final round of the presidential election showed Tadic, 54, leading with 58 percent, while Nikolic had 42 percent.

One Killed, Five Hurt, in Northern Kosovo Bomb Blast

An ethnic Albanian from Kosovo was killed and his wife and four children wounded Sunday in a bomb explosion at their home in Kosovska Mitrovica, police said.

The bomb was placed overnight on the window ledge of the victims' home, in the Serb-majority northern part of town, police added.

One Serb Dead, Two Injured in Tense Kosovo Town

One person died of wounds from a shooting incident in which two other Kosovo Serbs, including a policeman, were injured Wednesday in a suburb of the tense northern town of Kosovska Mitrovica, hospital sources and police said.

Hospital sources in Kosovska Mitrovica said one of the victims had died during surgery, but did not reveal his identity or profession.

Serbia's interior minister said Wednesday that two Pablo Picasso paintings owned by a German museum and stolen from a Swiss exhibition have been found in Belgrade.

Ivica Dacic provided no information on the exact location of the paintings or possible suspects in the theft.
