West Bank Mosque Torched, Fayyad Holds Israel Govt Responsible

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Monday said the Israeli government bore "full responsibility" for an arson attack on a mosque in the northern West Bank.

"The Israeli government bears full responsibility for these attacks against our people, property and sacred places," Fayyad said in a statement issued several hours after burning tires were rolled into the ground floor of a mosque in Qusra village, some 15 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Nablus.

Israel Will Not Apologize for Flotilla Raid

Israel will not apologize for its deadly 2010 raid on a Turkish-led flotilla of Gaza aid ships, an Israeli diplomatic source said Friday after a U.N. report accused the Jewish state of using excessive force.

"Israel once again expresses its regrets for the loss of human life but there will be no apology for this operation," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

Israel Offered Mubarak Medical Care

An Israeli ex-minister known for his close ties to Hosni Mubarak said on Wednesday he had offered the former president medical treatment in Israel during a meeting before the Egyptian uprising.

Speaking to Israeli military radio, Binyamin Ben Eliezer said he made the offer to Mubarak during a meeting attended by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

French Boat to Reach Gaza on Tuesday

The Dignite (al-Karama) left the Greek island of Kastellorizo late on Saturday following a troubled stay in Greece after Athens imposed a ban on the departure of any ships planning to join an international aid flotilla heading for Gaza.

Injuries, Arrests as Orthodox Clash with Israel Police

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews clashed with police in a conservative neighborhood of Jerusalem on Wednesday as tax officials tried to carry out inspections, a police spokesman told Agence France Presse.

Micky Rosenfeld said six police officers were slightly injured as some 300 protestors threw projectiles at them, and six demonstrators were arrested for taking part in the disturbances.

Israel Conducts Major Home Front Defense Drill

Israel on Sunday launched a major five-day home front defense exercise intended to prepare its population and emergency services to respond to massive missile attacks, the Israeli military said.

Named "Turning Point 5," the exercise involves testing nationwide siren systems and the cellular network, distributing emergency kits, improving coordination and practicing evacuation and shelter procedures.
