Syria Rebel Border Seizure Strands Lebanon Drivers

At least 30 Lebanese truck drivers are stranded on the Syrian-Jordanian border after rebels seized the Syrian side, prompting Amman to close a frontier crossing, a union said Friday.

"Between 30 and 35 Lebanese drivers and their trucks and refrigerated vehicles have been trapped in the free zone on the Jordanian-Syrian border since Wednesday," Omar Al-Ali, head of the Lebanese refrigerated truck union, told AFP.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea stated on Friday that the election of a new president lies in the hands of lawmakers, not regional powers, noting that the breakthrough in reaching an agreement over Iran's nuclear program may positively affect Lebanon.

He said after holding talks with Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi at Bkirki: “In principle, there is nothing stopping Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun from becoming president, but we have to take into consideration his political platform.”

Riyadh Says to Sue al-Akhbar, Newspaper Slams 'Direct Threat'

The Saudi Embassy in Beirut has tasked a team to sue al-Akhbar newspaper after Saudi Ambassador Ali Awadh Asiri accused it of publishing rumors about Riyadh, al-Watan daily reported on Friday.

The Saudi newspaper said that a lawsuit will be filed against “al-Akhbar which has become famous for belonging to the Iran-Hizbullah-Syria axis.”

Bank Audi Slams Reports on Money Laundering

Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Manager of Bank Audi Raymond Audi strongly slammed media reports claiming that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is using the bank's branches abroad to channel funds in favor of the organization.

“Reports published in al-Akhbar daily on Thursday and attributed to American and Lebanese banking sources involved in a meeting between U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing Daniel Glaser and the Board of Directors of the Association of Banks in Lebanon, are completely unfounded,” said Audi in a clarification letter to al-Akhbar newspaper.

Hollande, al-Rahi to Discuss Baabda Crisis this Month

Lebanon's presidential deadlock will top the agenda of talks that are expected to be held between French President Francois Holland and Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi this month, al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Friday.

The military prosecutor charged on Thursday Bilal and Omar Miqati with belonging to the extremist Islamic State group for the purpose of carrying out terrorist attacks.

Judge Saqr Saqr issued the charges against the two cousins who were arrested by the Lebanese army on March 24 near a checkpoint in the eastern town of Hrabta.
